    Default Question

Going to sound really stupid probably but it is somethin that is confusing me when playing preflop.

The early positions in full ring, would the small blind be the earliest as they would be the first to act postflop? Or would you count UTG as earliest as they are first to act preflop?

I have always counted the small blind as the earliest position on the table and adjusted my range that way but when looking at table position pictures on google a lot of them seem to be different. UTG seems to be EP1 and the blinds are separate altogether which has confused me slightly. I still play tight from either position but to get rid of the confusion would be nice lol

    Thanks!

blinds act last preflop but first for the rest of the hand and are generally considered to be out of position postflop. Your starting hand ranges should reflect the fact that in the blinds you will be at a positional disadvantage.

Don't forget that the blinds have dead money in front of them which means they face better pot odds on a call than other positions.

    E.g. Someone opens 3x.
Everyone between him and the blinds has to call 3BB into a pot of 4.5BB. They need at least 40% total equity to continue with a call.

The SB has to call 2.5BB into a pot of 4.5BB. He needs at least 36% total equity to continue with a call.

The BB has to call 2BB into a pot of 4.5BB. He needs at least 31% total equity to continue with a call.

What Keith said is absolutely a factor in how likely it is to get raised off of your call. This is something to remember when you consider your total equity.

and to further expand on the concept....since btn has position through flop turn and river the BTN should be playing a wider (weaker) range of hands since they can react to the actions of the out of position players, so the blinds can defend their blinds to a BTN steal since their range is typically stronger than the stealers range. for this they need fold equity so their resteal numbers should be reasonable. if someone is 3betting every time the button steals , btn can assume that they are likely 3betting light and then 4bet themselves lighter than normal(otherwise known as levelling wars)

Yeah I am familiar with position, I've stole from the BTN myself, would usually try if I feel I can get away with it. I've defended and been stolen from when I am in the and blind positions also. It was just that little bit about the early positioning that was confusing me as I seen two bits of info on it that were conflicting and it confused me. All info has helped but, basically just goin to play a similar range from UTG and the blinds, whilst tryin to successfully defend my blinds whenever I feel I can

Will also look up and do a bit more reading about playin from the blinds so I am a bit more competent with them

If there are any good articles on blind play feel free to share
