Isn't this essentially the statement hunters of dangerous exotic animals are trying to make? "look how I dominated the fiercest nature has to offer!"
  3. #12678
It has a lot more to do with the rarity. A 5 point buck is better than a 4 point because they're rarer. My BIL has been hunting bear for like two years and still hasn't gotten one. He really wants that bear. Somebody who killed a lion has a really rare trophy. I think that's the appeal. I think the idea that hunters are trying to feel big and strong and dominant is a straw man
  4. #12679
Another way of looking at it is that hunting is in our blood. We always wanted the biggest and best kill because it improves survival more than smaller kills. Modern day hunters subconsciously tap into a lot of those sentiments, and they strive for a big, bad kill

Has anyone here killed a 100lb+ animal?

I thinks that like 45 stone to the brits, but I can't be sure.

    Oh, the contradictions.

Bashing in the heads of rival groups to assert our dominance, take their women, lay claim a plot of land, etc. is something that's "in our blood."

And don't fucking kid yourself, people hunt big game to show they have big balls. Every other aspect of it can be represented full in other hobbies, including other forms of hunting.

I redboxed this and eventually watched the first like 30 minutes. It was forced and not worth watching.

Though watching it will help you appreciate South Park mocking it.

Now I've imdb'd it I do remember it. It's ok but far from great. Couple of pretty cool scenes in it though.

WWZ isn't as bad as people say. It has coherent story structure and plot development, which is above the zombie average. It's not good like normal movies are good, but it's good if you really want to watch zombies

I guess my 11 y/o niece just doesn't get enough respect from the kids at recess

A lot of big game hunters eat the meat. There's a lot of it and it's unique and flavorful

A lot of hunters do all sorts of game. Lots of small birds. Lots of bow hunting. Lots of wilderness. Lots of fishing. I didn't know all this ties into small-ball syndrome

Day Z (WWZ whatever Z the movie was named after) opens with the thickest depiction of a loving family I can recall off hand. I mean, they freely and lovingly touch each other over warming conversation minutes after waking up while the mother prepares a home-cooked breakfast on any old weekday. That shit is disgusting.

It can't be all the above?

My BIL hunts all sort of game. Fishes too. Oftentimes tiny ass perch. Raises chickens and goats. They do it for food and the experience. He also wants a black bear, but not for the meat because my sister pretends that she's Kosher and they can't eat bear. He'll donate the meat, he just wants a rug. He has a few coyote skulls hanging around his property. He practices his bow weekly. Getting a 5 point elk is hard. Getting a bear is harder

These are people who love the land, love the individualism, love thinking of themselves as Jeremiah Johnson. When they congregate with their friends, they sometimes talk about the coolness or the difficulty of their latest hunt, even if they got nothing. They take pride in their guns and their skills and their achievements because it's an identity and they believe that they can take care of their families in that rugged, primitive way. In the corners of their minds, they think when all the nancy sally sandy city liberals have a problem, they wave their hands in the air and cry. But not hunters. They can take care of themselves

Their wives are the same too. It's a culture, not a small dick

    That's definitely true.

I feel like this is acceptable in this context though. We get so few zombie films that I don't care about their silly tropes as long as they have coherent plots/characters and non-shitty cinematography

Making a weapon by hand and killing a lion with it serves functional purpose. I imagine its a great way to train nearly every survival skill and instinct we possess, or at least it was in the days when African tribes would do it.

I don't have any problem with modern-day gun-based hunting either, in theory. Certain types of it I find extremely distasteful like the types of hunting that rich people and politicians engage in, which tend to require hardly any skill and have very little risk. The whole point of hunting is to challenge yourself and pay tribute to a time when we had to do that, not to mention train for a time when you might have to do it in a zombie apocalypse or something.

But chicken-shit fish in a barrel Dick Cheney style hunting tilts me like crazy, and I imagine safari hunting like that woman in the link is similarly chicken-shit. Sounds like a bunch of white people in a caravan of humvees with all kinds of technology such that the lion has no chance whatsoever and poses no risk to the hunters.

The materials you wear are important, but I'd say, the way you wear your clothes is of the utmost importance. Layers, and interlocking your layers works wonders. Thermals on your legs, under your pants and tucking your bottom most torso layer (undershirt, etc.) into your thermals will change the way you feel about the winter months. Tucking thermals into socks, and wearing a jacket long enough to overlap the top of your pants brings on another degree of insulation. A top layer that can break the wind, and proper hand and head covering-- you're good to go. I've spent entire days working outside in sub 20°F weather like this, and I generally get too warm and have to unzip a bit to allow my body heat to vent.

Hi. So there's this waltz I'm trying to find, but can't remember what it's called, or who composed it. I think it's Strauss but it might not be.

    It goes -

    Dur-dur-dur dur
Dur dur dur dur dur dur dur dur durrrrr durrrr
    Dur-dur-dur dur
Dur dur dur dur dur dur dur dur durrrrr durrrr
    Dur-dur-dur dur
Dur dur dur dur dur dur dur dur durrrrr durrrr
Dun dun dun diddly diddly dun diddly diddly dun dun durrr
Dun dun dun diddly diddly dun diddly diddly dun dun durrr

    etc

    Can anyone help?
