Is it neccesary to have a HUD if you plan to play ring games? Does it really help or am I better off just using the reads that I get from the other players.

I would say a HUD is almost mandatory for ring games. Gives you reads that would be difficult/impossible to keep on your own via notes. But then again, I am fairly new to using a hud and don't get the most out of it, but I can definitely see the potential once you become more affluent with it.
