So I get in with 33 in late position. The flop is like this:

A 4 8 rainbow (not totally sure about that last one; it's not important.

A medium sized bet goes in, which I call. I'm thinking I need a 3 on the turn or I'm packing up my bats.

And the turn is a 3.

Of course, I'm already writing checks against this pot now. And relishing, with a sort of sadistic zeal, the fact that those people [sic] who played their annoying crappy ragged aces will all be going broke now. I'm hoping to catch people on A8 AND A4 because quite frankly I deserve it.

You can probably sense what's coming: I put a fat tasty bet in and get called (and cracked) by this guy:

...leading me to my new strategy: if there are any two cards, real or imagined, that could beat you, you should fold. Because people playing online will have them.

An example:

Let's say you have a pair of aces and the flop is
7 7 7

In online poker rooms, you should immediately fold this full house (don't even try to check it through). Because I guarantee that someone is holding 72 off. Probably the guy who raised UTG. You should do this even if you can see a seven still clinging to the bottom of the deck.

It's tough to get over bad people catching good cards. And you should always keep your eyes open for the nuts to find how far you are from them.

The same thing happens to me all the time.

I struggle and strugle to turn my $15 into $30 or so only to lose it all when my KK gets busted by A4.

I have KT in SB. I complete and the flop brings 9 J Q with 2 I know that I have 1 player chasing a flush, and the other player has TPTK, I push it all in to scare the flush draw. He calls, so I'm sure he's chasing to the nuts. He shows 9 3 Not even a good flush draw, but he catches it.

Bad things sometimes happen to good people.

However, I can also remember times where KK beat A4 and I won a good pot, and flush draws didn't catch and I won a huge pot. If I just keep taking away their pot odds, I will stay on top.

Where are you playing? What stakes? What is your bankroll? Are you posting hand histories? Reading books?

It's tough, and variance is something everyone has to suffer through. But the bitter truth is, if there is no upswing, it's not variance, it's bad play.

I've had bad play before. I've had variance before, it's very difficult to distinguish between the 2.

Step 1, deposit money into online poker. Make sure you have enough money to learn the game / survive the variance.
Step 2, play online poker
Step 3, post hand histories of big wins / losses and tough decisions. This way we can see what you did, how your could have done it different and you can tweak your game and fix any holes you may have.

THis is an unavoidable beat. roadwarrior had nothing to fear with this flop except making the others fold. He played his hand well. Sorry you got trapped in this hand.

And you will always come up on these types of hands. But consistent good play will make up profit that will more than pay for hands like this.

My bankroll is the 25 I put in this morning. Except now it's just $6 'cause I've been roundly defeated in 3 tourneys in a row. The last one on the bubble, with the hand described in this post.

I haven't posted many hand histories, because I feel bad about making people read them -- seems like there's something they'd rather be doing with their time.

I play SNGs at pokerroom, did some at PartyPoker but busted that account. To try to build bankroll, I'm doing freeroll multitable tourneys too.

I read Doyle's book, and someone named Ken Warren. And a bunch of websites. And I play a live game every so often and do rather well there. Net income: live game $330, online -$100

Too low. You need much, much more to play in those games.

With a $25 bankroll you would be best off in the $.05 / $.10 limit games. (you still need a little more to play here, but based on the little I know about you, this may be a great place to be)

The hand histories forum is specifically there so you can post histories of a hand for review and analysis. You won't be abusing it by posting there.

At pokerroom the smallest ring blinds are .25-.50

I played those ring games with a bankroll of about $300. But it's gone, and I was advised to play SNGs only so that I wouldn't lose as much as quickly. It looks like there's definitely a hole in my game. I'm not an expert, but I know how to make the pot odds and I know a couple of tricks.

What gets me all bothered is that it SHOULDN'T (I hope) require World Class play to beat people who think that Qxs is a great hand for raising preflop. That is to say, I'm don't feel like I should be getting rich, but losing to this crowd Every Time I sit down is a bit tiresome.
