Overbooking flights is a common and accepted practice. Buying people off of the plane has proven to be an overwhelmingly successful solution to the problem. It works almost every time. When it doesn't work, some cops show up and ask someone to leave. The vast vast vast vast majority of people see a badge, and a gun, and fucking obey.

There are 25,000 flights every single day! Just in America! This is one of probably a handful of times this has ever happened. Based on historical statistics, the odds of this happening are several hundred kajillion to one.

This man was committing no crime. The cops had no right to move him. This guy's stubbornness meant that United couldn't transport one of its' flight crew members to another city to work another flight. That means that flight is delayed, and it has ripple effects throughout United's entire schedule.

All of that sucks for a lot of people, but none of it is a crime. It's an operational challenge experienced by a private company. Companies have operations problems all the fucking time. Most of them don't get to call in thugs when the cost of fixing that problem exceeds the $800 budget that they allotted to fix it.

The cops should have said "well, we tried, but he's not moving". After that United can either offer more money, cancel the flight, delay other flights, find alternate transport for its crew, or call in another crew member who's on their day off. That's what every other company in the world does. United should never have had any expectation of physical intervention from law enforcement.

I disagree with the judge when he says he has a right to be there. I'm sure the 'contract' involved in purchasing the ticket contains some fine print that says they can boot you for overbooking. So I don't agree with the Judge's point that United has to fulfill a contract with the man.

They'd already patronized the business when they bought the ticket to get on the flight. They couldn't then un-patronize it by not taking the flight since the airline already had their money. All they would be doing is throwing their own money away and causing themselves inconvenience. Saying you have to cause yourself an immediate inconvenience and financial loss that would give no immediate benefit to MrI'maDoctor in order not to be complicit in his mistreatment is silly.
