I think some of them are larger than others? With just a spear and a log suit, I was able to take some of the smaller ones without running away at all and just duking it out.
There are 3 sizes of them. They have different attack points, hit points, and speed. Big ones hit harder, are tougher, and walk faster than smaller ones.
Yeah, you can tank the small ones, but really, you should practice basic kiting on them. There's no easier mob in the game to kit, so I'd make it a point to try to take down single tree guards w/o taking damage. When you're facing 2 or more of them, it gets much harder. You need to separate them somehow if you're going to fight them.
*KIT (pronounced, and commonly spelled "kite"): an acronym for Kill In Transit. A fighting style whereby you draw and dodge an attack, then counter-attack. Repeat. Variations include luring an enemy into trap.
*mob: a shortening of MOBile enemy. contrast to a "static" or immobile enemy (a la tentacles).
Note that all enemies are commonly called mobs these days.
