Jason Kelce, 6th-round draft pick, got the start at center. New OL coach much prefers smaller, athletic players, and the incumbent is Jamaal Jackson, who's a hulking beast. Kelce was pretty atrocious, allowing a sack, contributing to a fumble on a snap with Vick, and drawing a penalty. This is probably good news because Jackson is a top-notch pass protector who was sorely missed last season and the OL doesn't need anymore on-the-job training than is necessary.
Danny Watkins, 1st-round pick at RG, also had a rough first quarter. The line didn't give Vick much time to get the ball downfield and RT will be an interesting dilemma until some guys get healthy.
All news was positive on defense: rookie MLB Casey Matthews looked a lot better; Kurt Coleman looks like a real player at safety and the corners played predictably well. DT Mike Patterson returned from a scary seizure and had a sack. The Eagles look remarkably deep at some key positions: CB, WR, DL and it would seem that some more minor moves could be made as starting-caliber players are on the bubble.
this is good analysis, and given the depth of the eagles i wouldn't be surprised if the browns picked up another eagles cut or 2 (or send another late round pick over...)
my friend made a comment the other day about the browns being the eagles triple A farm team, which makes sense in some respects given the coaching and front office connections and generally less talent across the board.
I was wholly unimpressed with the browns yesterday, although the defensive line showed some nice flashes (or the eagles O-line is much worse than I thought). Taylor looks like a potential beast in the making, mitchell looks good for a career nobody, sheard showed a burst off the edge although runs himself right out of any run play (not sure if this is part of the scheme or not), and rubin is still a very large man. but man, watching the browns receivers go up against the elite philly corners was kind of scary as a cleveland fan.
