Martin Scorsese can suck a nut. Had high hopes for Shutter Island, but I cannot for the life of me get past shallow sensationalism. I have absofuckinglutely no clue why it seems that every time any halfway decent director makes a psychological thriller or creepy drama they're only able to do so with sudden flashes and loud noises. I watch film with intent, and every goddamn time these dicksuck no-talent asshats use primeval and disruptive tactics to elicit an emotional response I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack.
When you read a disturbing book, you're disturbed because the writer uses profound and adept storytelling to tap into your deeper psychology, not because when you turn the page a skeleton falls from the ceiling and a horn honks in your ear. I hate these fucking clowns who belie their own perceived cinematic acumen by relying on the lowest denominator in order to create their disturbing milieu. The Departed was great, Goodfellas was great, but I swear to god Scorsese just fucked that all in the ass by treating Shutter Island like it needed a guy hiding in a darkened corner waiting for his cue to say boo
I'm doubly pissed that I wasn't even able to finish the film. I'm sure the script was awesome, but if I put up with more of that BOO OMG GOTCHA assaults on my basal senses I'd probably end up in a psych ward myself. You create a creepy environment and feeling by appealing to creepy factors of the human situation, not by hammering away at uncontrollable fight or flight responses or by overloading senses
