Gov't run online gambling. Not sure if it will be good or not. Fish may be plentiful, could be rigged seeing it's Ontario gov't setting it up.

Not sure why you're drooling, dude. This is probably bad news.

For one thing, the Government will not be able to run a Stars/FTP quality site so the experience will be shit. And you know this is just going to lead to blocking sites and/or financial transactions with non-OLGC sites. They keep quoting the "Ontarians spend $400M on online gambling" number...they don't just want a piece of it, they want the biggest piece of it and have the power to legislate to make it happen.

In fact, I just got this email from an online casino today. We'll see more of this. I don't believe it is outright prohibited yet as the email suggests but other sites will follow suit to cover their asses.

    Dear Mr. Selleck,

We regret to inform you that due to the new regulations of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Loto-Québec and the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, online gaming products in Canada are prohibited. Unfortunately we are required to add Canada to our list of excluded countries. Players from Canada will no longer be permitted to play at XXXXXXX starting September 24th, 2010.

We wish you luck in your future endeavours and hope you have enjoyed your time at our XXXXXXX.

    Sincerely,
    Fuckface

Yea benny, that was my concern too. My only hope is they are after the almighty casino dollar and not necassarilly poker rake. We know how brutal they are now at the live casinos when it comes to there rates of earn. ( I have heard the slots are in the high 80's% ) If they start to talk about regulations for deposits and withdrawals, all we can hope is other sites don't close up shop on us. Maybe if it's easy to deposit we mau find a fish fest but the tilting software may make that impossible for us to play at a resonable rate.

Why on Earth would it lead to the OLGC wishing to block other sites? I'm pretty sure that's against fair market rules.

Sorry, can't find so called 'market rules'.

I also can't find any evidence of Ontario blocking websites in a similar manner.

Right, there aren't yet (child pron aside - and I can assure you there are no guidelines as to what cybertip can block) but no gov't entities in Canada have ventured into e-business yet either so there hasn't been a monetary reason to.

There are no market rules when it comes to the Internet. Online gambling in particular isn't a regulated marketplace, so it would be quite easy for federal or local governments to step in with legislation "to protect consumers" and Canadian interests. The technology is already present within the ISPs to block sites, it's just a matter of the gov't offering telecom providers the legal backing to use it. I'm not sure why this seems out of sorts to you...it's exactly what the States is doing, only the US will generate tax revenue by forcing consumers to play at legal private sites and we'll do it through legal government-run sites.

I'm sure you mounties have international trade agreements that technically bar blocking foreign sites. US likes to ignore her agreements, but is there reason to believe that Canada will violate theirs?

I was wondering why Eurobet (Ongame network) suddenly decided to punt me out of their club.

Totally agree with Benny on this, it's not a good thing.

If everywhere opens it's own brand of poker sites, it kind of defeats the purpose of "online" poker and the freedom of choosing who you play against it currently uniquely provides.

Likew French can only play vs French, and Italians can only play vs. Italians.
