I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than 50 buy-ins to accommodate for swings, withdrawals for living expenses, and the chance to keep moving up in stakes. So if you're playing $5/10 NLHE with a $1000 buy-in, I'd want $50,000 in the bank. For online play, I'd want at least 100 buy-ins. I know a few live pros who grind $1/2 at the casinos and make about $15/hr but never move up. Ugh, no thanks.

There's no set rules, it's what you're comfortable with, but the fact that you're even asking this question leads me to believe you have no business doing so. But it's you're life though, do what you want.

it doesn't matter what your bankroll is if you aren't beating the game on a professional level

Concentrate at not sucking at poker first.

Think of it this way - if you're a young baseball prospect, do you hop directly into the majors right off the bat (no pun intended)? Of course not. You work your way through highschool, then the college leagues; then you get drafted and spend four or five years in the minors before getting called up - if you're lucky.

Climb the stakes online. It is the only realistic way to get decent at poker these days. Crush the microstakes, move up to low stakes. If you're doing well there, the opportunity to move up again will present itself.

Bottom line: if you can't light it up in the minors...

I should also point out that you'd probably need to have played more than oh, say, the 10,000 or so hands you've played in online poker before deciding to go pro.

There are people on this site who play that many in one day (and aren't down, either COUGH COUGH).

50BIs for live 1kNL? lolwtf if your beating 1/2 online(Stars,FTP or Party) you're not going to need 50BIs for 1kNL live.

That is what I would be comfortable with. There's nothing wrong with being a bankroll nit when you're playing to put food on the table. Plus, the added cushion will allow for shots at bigger games when a whale happens to walk in the door and wants to gambool it up.

But, ok whatever you say then.

This might be a better question to ask in the live poker forum.
