If you've got $500 to deposit you should be looking at .1/.2 at the very max otherwise the short term setbacks you describe will just continue to run all over you eventually. Search for articles on bankroll management/variance

With a $500 BR, he can certainly play 5nl/10nl, and 25nl if he's a winning player. But it wouldn't be wise to play 50nl. | |

Imo, keep your 500 and continue playing your current bankroll. Drop to 2nl (.01/,02) and start grinding up the stakes.This accomplishes two things; 1) your roll won't be effected as much from run bad and 2) you will prove to yourself that you are (or are not) a winnig player. Move up as bankrol management and win rate allows. See the articles in the beginners digest for prerequisites. | |
