If hero was ahead on the turn and lost to a rivered straight or flush he played it perfectly. Getting your money in with great odds like that is always great. I'm not saying checking the flop was okay, but betting the flop isn't meant to take it down, it's meant to build the pot and win a big pot because we flopped a set.
*edit* - there are no straights that got there on the river
