How tight is too tight?

I'm playing 25NL at Party. I've been playing the opening hand stratagies on this site and I am up but only a little. I feel like I fold so often that when I get a hand everyone knows it. Therefore, my pots are never that big. Should I play a couple of stupid ones? How do you avoid the "tight tell"?

Loosening up helps this a lot.. but be careful. Without the proper postflop skills, you can be losing even more money. And go tighter again when the table loosens up.

how tight do you actually play? do you have any way of finding out a %? In general, you should be playing maybe 15% of your hands or so, not including the blinds, so you should be playing 15% of hands where you have to put money into the pot to play, + whatever % you can just check in the big blind.

to an extent, people will know what you have more easily, but this isn't a problem. find the bad players and be patient and you will get paid anyway.

position, SC's and semi bluffs, just to name a few. Start looking to catch flops cheaply with other hands. Straight draws, flush draws maybe two pair on a shit flop. But from my limited experience, not all at once. try to find what your comfortable with and use it first, then find something else. when I tried to dd these things after doing alot of reading, I added it all to my game at once, and when four tabling, I lost track to often with position, whether I caught the flops, my odds and I got lazy and started calling way to much with OK cards in not good positions.

That's pretty tight. I remember Sinkrox from FTR, who i used to play against on Laddies Poker, posted 60k hands where he ran at 10/3.5 (!) and he was still showing a nice profit.

Practicing good table selection is obviously important if you're going to nut camp. Read Fnord's sticky on this topic:

Play the standard starting hands and play them well. At lower limits people rarely pay attention to others playing styles. You'd have to be pretty damn tight to be playing too tight. Almost everyone gets their profit from AA and KK so if you can get away w/ only playing AA KK AK QQ etc. w/o everyone folding every time you raise then thats the way you want to play. Don't get yourself in trouble w/ J9s and the like just toss em away. If you are going to lossen up do it from the back side...uh oh that sounded perverted...

It seems that, atleast at unibet, everyone at 10NL is playing a nut-camping game. They fold fold fold. Preflop raise only the real winners. I am beating this stake with Lagg-style because I steal so many pots, and because of the occasional donk that gets frustrated by my play and decides to play back at me.

Then when I go to 20NL, no more ABC poker. It's crazy, loose and aggressive! I can do much better there, profit-wise, because these tables are were you can get rich quick. It's very different from my usual Lagg style but adapting is no problem for me.

Only problem is, this is high variance play. I'm biting my tongue atm and I keep grinding 10NL because I need to be rolled ($300-$400) for 20NL before I can go play there. A few more days if the cards don't decide to hate me should do it. ($225 atm)


But anyway, my point is.. nutcamping works if the table is maniac-style. General Tagg is great on a loose table. On a tight table, Lagg reigns supreme. Atleast from my experience.

One thing to caution against is loosening up your starting requirements before your game is good enough to play these hands post-flop. For example, if you start limping from LP with 45o (which is pretty loose) and you flop something like A65 rainbow, you need to be able to lay it down to any aggression or you will lose a TON of money to hands like mid pocket pairs, etc.

Another thing to consider is that you may be playing the right hands pre-flop, but not playing them to maximize the money you win on those hands. A couple of things to look for here are:

Do you spill your cofee trying to hit the raise button every time you get a hand?
Are you folding whenever you don't hit two pair on the flop?
Is your hand automatically getting folded while you try to calculate your pot odds?
Are you pusing your entire stack when you get pocket A's in the SB and everyone has folded to you?

Of course I am kidding on the above questions (unless you said yes to any of them), but hopefully you get the point.
