Default How to start playing online?

    Hey guys,
I wanna start playing poker online for money but dont know where to start. Which site should a beginner start at? (Pacific, party, paradise, empire, true..?)
I want to start with the lowest amount of money as i cant afford to lose $100 with this. I usually play NL but would it be better to start off with Limit?
Also which books are best to start off with.
    I have read:
    Play poker like the pros
    Theory of poker
    Super System

Any others that are worth reading?

    Thanks for any replies,

P.S. Can you deposit money through a bank account?

Well, this seems like the questions of the day.

How do I start playing poker online?
Set up an account through Neteller. It's like Paypal, but Neteller is accepted at practically all the poker sites. You can deposit money into your Neteller account straight from your bank account.

Poker Stars, Paradise Poker, Ultimate Bet and others offer a $2 NL room. Max buy-in is $2 and the blinds are $.01 / $.02 You can't get much smaller limit than that.

Paradise also offers a $10 NL room that has $.05 / $.10 blinds Pretty low limit if you aren't ready to make the leap into $25 rooms.

    What books to read.

Not everyone accepts every online bank. Compare Paypal and Neteller to American Express and Discover. Not everyone takes them, and some take one but not the other. I haven't found a poker place yet that accepts Paypal, so maybe it just doesn't exist.

If you can't find one that accepts Paypal, (and good luck trying) get yourself a Neteller account.

Ill just use a credit card, that works well doesnt it?

A couple questions about the paradise $2 NL poker games:
    1) Which is better more or less players.
    2) Should i look for the loosest game there? And play tight and aggresive?
    3) Should i play more aggressive or less because these games are so loose?

    Thanks.

less players = more action, not necessarily the best for a beginner

ideal game for me = not much preflop raising, a few chasers, and do play tight/aggressive. i'm not a fan of limping preflop (it's very situational, typically hands like small pocket pairs, KTs on the button in an unraised pot, etc.), so if you have a hand you want to play, generally (think position, other players, table "mood", etc) raise it preflop

standard poker answer = "it depends" - who's acting after you, what happened before you, is it a "loose/passive" table (people play a lot of hands but not much preflop raising), how strong are the players, etc.
i hate what i have become to escape what i hated being...

Use a credit card if you can, but many credit card issuers do not allow the card to be used at poker sites.

If you can't use a credit card, check out Firepay or Neteller.

Paypal does not allow their service to be used at poker sites.

Yeah, the $2 NL games at Paradise are a good start. Eventually you should try Party/Empire.

    Another depositing question:
Can you transfer money from a paypal account to a neteller account, if so how could i use the money in my paypal account (the money i havent withdrawn) to send to a neteller account.
Also do i need to put in a credit card number if i open a neteller account?

    Thanks alot.

I think the reason Paypal is no longer used for online poker is because Ebay bought Paypal and put a stop to its use for online gambling.

If you want to send money from PayPal to Neteller it's a 2-step process. Easiest way is to send it from PayPal to your bank account. Then from your bank account to Neteller.

The minimum deposit for most sites (Paradise included) is $50. If you are wanting to stick to the $2 NL games, you can easily get my with just this $50.

Go to this site www.neteller.com and start up. Any other questions you have should be answered in the process.

    Haha, I don't think so.

Maybe you should just start playing freerolls, kid. Freerolls are tournaments that nearly all online poker sites have that are completely free to enter, and you can win money in them. If you place in one of them, then you'd have some money in the site that you could use to play some of the stakes that you were looking to play anyway.

Even without bankroll problems, it may be a good way to start off playing online.

Here's a site with a list of daily freerolls that may interest you - http://freerollers.tripod.com/id1.html

haha. Yeah, the $50 minimum has scared off a few friends of mine from playing online poker.

So these freerolls are free entries where the winner gets prizes as high as $200?
Which sites are usually the best for freerolls?

Are you guys sure that its a $50 min deposit for paradise cause im pretty sure it says that theres a $20 minimum?
Also if I put my bank account online (through NEteller) does it give out any personal information (sex, religion, age, marital status) I hate putting things like that on the net?

i mentioned on another post that there is a $25 Minimum deposit on Superior Poker. Good for beginners and you can play $1 tournaments every 20 mins or so.

The also offer .05/.10 limit tables for cheap players and are usually a Fish Bowl.

The problems though are that there are no where near as many players as on any other poker site. 500 players play maximum at once.

I have a question though, I consider myself above a beginner but below an iintermediate player. I've played pratically 6 hours a day for the last 30 days or so and I am ready to move back to Party Poker or another site and my bankroll is around $50 (not really a bankroll). I've been comtemplating going to the .50/1.00 tables at party poker with my $50 wad and see how I do. I've been playing the .10/.20 limit tables and have been slightly successful, and I've played the .25/.50 limit tables and have also done well. I want to move up to a more populous sight so I have a choice of tables to play at. I am a pretty patient player and I think a $50 placement at the .50/1.00 limit table at Party Poker will get me through the bad beats and fish.

I am dead even on all the SNG tournaments I play and find it hard to make any kind of money that way, I make the most on the limit tables.

    Thoughts welcome.

Yaya forget about the post there were two tournaments at the same time i signed up for the wrong one.
The reason i got confused was cause the people in the game kept telling this is for real money.

Just a quick freeroll question lets say I win $5 at pacific poker do I need to make a deposit for the minimum amount and then add on the $5 to be able to play or could I just use that $5 to play at pacific poker without making any deposits?
The same question goes out to all freerolls.

    Thanks alot.

I think as long as you have registered a real money ac it doesn't matter, whether you can open a real money account without making a deposit i'm uncertain but I'd wager you can.
Poker is all about the long long long long long long long term . . .

You can play with your freeroll winnings without depositing. And you can withdrawl from them if you get to the minimum withdrawl amount (usually $50) on the vast majority of sites.

Finally won my first freeroll today.
Came 3rd in aloha poker and won $12. (Coulda came first but I slowplayed my pocket kings like a moron with 3 people left).
Unfortunetly that didnt last long. I started in a $5 max NL .05/.10 game and lost $5 on one hand with triples kings to a set 8s full house. I continued playing but it kept going on like win a small/medium pot lose a big one and slowly i kept decreasing.
I couldnt use my tournament style play in these ring games, mostly because I wasnt as aggressive. If I had a raising hand AJ, 99, I couldnt raise enough to knock enough people out without jepordizing half my stack, so alot of people would limp in with to a small raise and outdraw me.

I then switched to limit which had about the same success and slowly with a couple bad beats got widdled down to 0.

My question is how does tournament play differ from ring games and how should I play on a short stack?

Is it best to start with limit or NL?

    Thanks alot.

Hey, Ultimate bet allows a minimum deposit of only $25. they have the $2NL and free rolls, you oughtta try that. Also every site has its promotions for bonus money, definately look into the bonuses.

Apples and Oranges, figure out which one you enjoy more, and focus on it. I've found that ring requires far more patience (dont bet any money unless your huge favorite), it basically becomes a grind until your packing a monster and you hope someone falls for the trap (A high flush Vs Queens full = 70$ to my bankroll). I enjoy SnGs and tournaments more, but its a matter of preference, same with limit vs NL, everyone here has their specialty, except me, im dead money in the showdowns, but thats beside the point.

pokerroom.com has a $10 minimum deposit. It is fairly small compared to PP and empire but there is never trouble finding a game, even at weird hours of the day. Not sure what their lowest stakes are for NL ring games, but you can play $6 SnG that tend to reward rockish type playing more than PP.
