    Default Some Beginner Questions...

well first i started playing poker about 4 or 5 years ago, mostly as a hobby..never read a poker book or had any kind of strategy really but i was about even overall. Now i started playing at Pokerstars with a 50 deposit, and i am running poker tracker for the free 60 days(which i will buy if i can make that playing poker) but heres my dilemma..i start out good playing every day i can but i start losing after a while..and not a little either..i was up to 70 then in one sitting i was down to 43..then i realize im playing garbage and start folding more and slowly get my money back but i seem to always break even more than anything. so i guess my question is what should i do to keep myself from tilting?? more time in between sessions?? more breaks?? and is there a such thing and a winning tilt?? because thats the way it seems to me. When im winning im seeing the flop about 40 to 50 percent and when im losing alot its about the same. But when im playing good i see about 28-32 percent. and how do i post my pokertracker info?? maybe someone can gimmie pointers based on the info in the program. Thanks in advance for the help..

    play less tables
    play shorter sessions
    take breaks

if you find yourself getting bored and that causes you to play trashier hands, then add an extra table or two

    Welcome to FTR!

Dude if your seeing the flop 40-50% you're always loosing you're just not aware of it yet. Get your vpip% down (like 15% - 18%) by only playing good hands in position. I suspect you don't really know what good hands are yet and that's ok cuz nobody here knew either before they knew!

Do yourself a favor and play like one or two short sessions a day, say like 45 minutes. Then take the next 1.5 hours and read EVERYTHING in the beginners Guide. Then kick your sessions up a little and read EVERYTHING in the beginners Guide again.

Good luck and stay active in here and you'll be amazed at the progress you will make.

Most of us use Pokerstove (google it - it's a free download) for interesting hands AWAY from the table. At the table, like PQ says, we estimate outs and equity performing decent enough mental math to get within 1-2% of the right answer.

It's all about self control and patience. No one became succesful overnight or even in a year, you'll certainly see progress just not millions in a year.

thanks for all your help guys..i tried the poker stove but it got me in alot of trouble..lol ill do it in my head..itll pay off in the end im sure.. % from flop to turn is outs x 4 and from turn to river is outs x 2 correct?? and i also tried a different method..i start at 2nl and when i get up to 5 i take a break then move to 5nl and so on and so forth until i feel im being outplayed..ive made it to 20nl and walked away..but the next day i made it to 50nl and lost it all which sucks..dosent affect my bankroll much in a way but it does in the sense i doubled it and lost it all.. what do you think?? should i stick to 2nl until my bankroll alows me to move up or keep doin what im doing??

Sound Bankroll management is key to any poker player. You should have 20 buy-ins minimum for the stakes you are playing at. So to play $2nl you'd need $40, to play $5nl you'd need $100 etc. This is absolute minimum, many ftr regs actually use a 25 or 30 buy-in cushion instead.

As for counting your odds, you should only count the odds to the next card, so your odds of making a flush from flop to turn or turn to river are almost the same. The only exception is if you're facing an all-in bet on the flop, in which case the odds almost double.

A quick way to do it would be to count the outs, multiply by two and add two to give you your % chance of hitting. For example if you're on a flush draw on the flop then you have 9 cards to make your flush, (9x2)+2 = 20% chance of making your flush on the next card. This is called the 'shotgun' method and it's close enough to use on the fly.
