Default Where do you play if poker is illegal in your state?

The closest place to me is Harrah's cherokee casino here in NC, but it's still about 3 hours and $50 for a tank of gas, so you already start in a big hole. They're moving from pokerpro to pure card tables (thank god).

I haven't been able to find any home games, and not sure I'd want to play at a home game where I don't know anyone anyways since you could risk getting robbed or raided.

I guess I don't have any other options other than when I am traveling. Any suggestions?

I did a little wee when I read this.

What's with countries that tax winnings though? Just seems illogical and that it would be a total ball-ache to do the tax return.

The States taxes poker too afaik, or at least you're supposed to declare it - I mean it's a form of income and in the states you even pay tax on f lotto. Don't really wanna get into a tax debate, but you've made me curious about why it seems illogical to you.

I've no idea about how the detail works in the countries that tax, but surely this is a zero-sum game between players and providers? Assuming all players and providers pay the same tax rate and all claim their losses and pay their dues, there would be no net tax revenue but a pain in the ass with administration. If anything, there may be a tax loss to the state depending on the non-poker income of the winners and losers.

This also assumes that the tax rate would be the same in all transactions. The tax rate generally depends on whether it applies to a company or an individual, total annual income of said entity, plus a bunch of other crap.

When the government actually passes regulatory legislation, it will include a method of getting tax monies out of everyone involved.

If your friend (or anyone) gives you a TV (or anything), you technically owe taxes on the "fair market value" of the gift, as the gift represents a source of material income.
Income tax, sales tax, property tax. It's the MURRICAN trinity!!!!

Save your losing lotto scratch-off tickets. You can use the losing tickets as proof of gambling losses, and reduce the net winnings on which you pay taxes.

You don't play scratch-offs? I'm sure you can still get your hands on some losing tickets if you make friends with the right people. Of course, you are moving into the tax fraud zone when you go there.

Hmm, okay I hadn't thought of it that way. That's interesting to think about.

In practice, to the best of my knowledge you're not allowed to carry gambling losses forward (you can use 'em to reduce your income for the current year but if you lose more than you made you're nevertheless sitting at 0 coming into next year), and since recreational players won't bother to deduct their losses but winning regs do/should pay taxes, I guess it'd be a net plus for the tax man.

However if poker weren't gambling (or whatever, such that you could carry losses forward) and your assumptions above hold, I guess I can't really argue. Interesting.
