tournament, sit'n go or cash game?

Actually, whichever way, if you are a very beginner, start with Dan Harrington books, they're easy to read and enjoyable.

Try Harrington on cash games (haven't read them myself, but I read his tournament ones when I started).

Then go on with Sklansky's no limit theory and practice.

    The standard books are
Theory of Poker by Sklansky, very very good but examples are from games besides holdem
No Limit Holdem Theory and Practice by Sklansky and Miller, again very good.

There's also alot of good ebooks available like
    Easy Game by Balugawhale
Small Stakes No Limit Holdem by Ed Miller
The Poker Blueprint by Tri Nguyen

These are all good books from what I've read.

Books suck compared to the amount you can learn just by posting hands/chatting with good players or reading updated content online.

Use the money you would spend on books and deposit it and play 2NL after reading the BC Digest.

A great book with excellent examples is Sklansky's No Limit Theory and Practice -- it helped me when I was starting out.

Though No-Limit Hold'em: Theory and Practice is basically ToP re-written in the context of NLHE.
