3-bet in NL

Ok, so I see the term 3-bet thrown around all over the place.

Especially by you regs.

According to the definitions page... 3-bet is as follows:
3-Bet = to make the 2nd raise in limit poker

e.g. UTG+1 calls, MP1 raises, HERO 3-bets

So, please explain to me how 3-bet works in Full-Ring No Limit poker... since there are no defined betting limits, yet everyone seems to throw 3-bet around... what does it mean to 3-bet in no-limit?

Same thing... 3-bet is raising the raiser... 4-bet is raising the 3-bettor etc. The only diff with NL is that you get to pick the raise size (which is frequently somewhere between 2.5 - 4x the raise, depending on everything going on...)

Just for clarification, in NL during preflop betting, calling the big blind is the first bet.

No. The big blind itself is the first bet. Then if there is a raise and a reraise, the 2nd raise is what is sometimes referred to as a 3-bet (it is the third bet). Any call in between is not a "bet" (it is a call) and doesn't count. 3-bet isn't a good term to use in no-limit, since the size can vary.

the size of the reraise (3bet) has nothing to do with what it should/should not be called. In NL you could 3bet to 4x the original raise, or 3bet to 5x, 6x, 7x etc. its still a 3bet.

This confused me at first, too. It seems like the "terms" sticky could be updated to make more sense for NL.

It makes more sense when (like spoon said) you think of the BB as the first bet, the first pre-flop raise as the 2nd bet, then raising again is a 3bet.

I was confused because the 3bet seemed to me like the 2nd raise - just because the BB is forced doesn't mean it's not a bet, tho.

I know what I wrote has been said by others, but I just wanted to add that poker lingo can be confusing. The Beginner's Circle is the place to clarify things so you understand the threads and can something out of them. Keep asking questions, post some HH's and then kick some butt at pokah.

the bb is a forced bet, that's why you CALL pf and it's not called "betting" pf
