    Default Return of Da GOAT

Well Multiple blogs seem to be the norm around here so ill join in so i can be cool too!!!

Currently im sitting on top of €2,950. I withdrew a HUGE chunk to pay off my car loan early (which just cleared today). About a month or so ago I sat my final chartered accountancy exams which I had 8 weeks prior to study so not alot of poker development happened though I still played some.

This blog is to help me focus more and I hope to update regularly and make my post of a better quality (i usually update when in work but i dont have HHs ever with me). Vi's operation thread has set a great standard for what an operation thread should be and how you can improve from doing so.

Im gonna play 100NL of 6max and Full Ring and take shots at 200NL when I feel im playing well. Lately Im lacking a little bit of confidence regards my own poker level, there is so much I dont know. I dont get the option to play a ton anymore but what i can get is okay now, if i used this time to study PT instead of playing I would feel alot better.

Awww man, I was going to bump the old one, but you acknowledged it.

Ah well, good luck. What sites do you play at?
    <SrslySirius> Hal Lubarsky, my nemesis.
<SaltLick> are you seriously losing to a blind guy

    Awwwww man x 2 lol

Ive withdrawn all funds on Prima, overall im down 2.4K on prima on PT though im sure im break even given bonuses and RB so meh. Ive money on Titan (which initially seems better than prima for fish), and Ive money stuck on everest until the security clears there). Prima is an absolute dog for cashouts (aint that right TJ) BTW can take from 4-7 days I found. Everest isnt to much better either. SO titan here I come though Ive picked a bonus that will be too hard to clear IMO, could of done with getting small quick fire bonuses to bump the BR back up.

I'm 100NL 6max on Titan too, no doubt we'll run into each other soon.
GL with the blog, the last one was a good read for me, watching you move up thru the micros.

Good luck with the new op goat. In case you want to share, how big was your BR before you cashed out?

Silu73 (BTW you change your Username?)

I dont mind you asking at all. The highest point of my BR i think was €8.6K but it dwindled down to about 7K when I withdrew 4K to payoff one of my loans. I was getting a little stressed with my real life financial situation. Im mostly a trainee accountant still and get paid very very little in real life, lol losing a few buyins at 100nl never really bothers me too much but if i lost that in real life id be on life tilt lol.

Anyway when its my lunch break here in work i will post stuff on my session last night, i will try keep the post up to a good standard esp incl. ranges which i really want to get better at which in turn will help my bet sizing decisions. Ive spoken to JGB. spenda and TJ about writing an article on bet sizing. It would be a major undertaking and i think ive alot of literature to get through before i can put something good together. I def dont wanna just copy and paste some random bits together bcoz it will help nobody really, i want to really understand what im writing and answer questions on each bit and back up what im writing.

    Vi,

Definitely have become a good player man. Congrats!!

Made a very poor call IMO on a river, why do ppl feel like calling when they know they are beat??

EDIT to incl hand:: You may feel its not the worst call ever but ive no reads vs opp.

Anyway that call and some losses to shortstacks were the sum of my loss so meh.

Tonight the gf is going to swimming so id like for myself to study instead of play. Go through PT and keep in mind ISF Theorem as I review.

Update my BR is just a little over 3K.

Things I need to start doing::

    1) Preflop squeezing. Basically its not in my arsenal at all.
    2) c/r or raise c/b's IP on flops with air to protect my big hands.
    3) Consider ISF Theorem while playing.
    4) 3 bet alot more IP on btn/co
    5) Give some time to reviewing PT each week
    6) Become better at value betting river

Note to self: I should try just stick to ONLY 6max to acheive the above instead of playing FR.

    Quick tip (taken when skimming Vi's thread) on value betting river;

    OOP
Dry board = bet 1/4-1/3 PSB
Wet board = check to induce bluffs

    IP
    Dry board = see above
Wet board = PSB or overbet

Ok ill try to keep update my thoughts on the above at the end of the month and maybe do a regular update monthly/weekly or something of my stats/BR etc

Yeah I changed my username. The old one was part of my e-mail address and I used to get heaps of spam. Since I changed the name it has gone much better.

For what you said about c/raising. It has not been in my arsenal at all. However, I have started to c/raise flops if I believe that the board has not hit my opp at all but would have hit my calling range.

I know I got lucky in this hand but sometimes it can really work like a treat. In this case I didn't 3-bet because his att to steal was below 20%.

On flop id rather float flop though c/r'ing is fine. if its vs a thinking player then he could 4bet with worse. If you had something like QJ then it would be more like what i was talking about or if flop was all low cards and unpaired board.

BTW you can 3bet PF a % of the time depending on opp ATSB %.

Hand 1). I would usually 3bet preflop unless UTG will double barrel with a reasonable frequency. If he was reasonably tricky/aggressive postflop, i would still only call about 1/3rd of the time. Getting to showdown with a pair of Aces w/ A-Q vs an ABC player's UTG range is probably marginal and a suited connector would be more profitable/easy to play in the same situation.

Hand 2). i would probably just call the flop, but as you had a bet sizing tell your line seems fine. As you said there are too many scare cards to just call on the flop if you think he could be bluffing.

I don't know of a quick way to exactly calculate F.E., but if you were willing to go really in depth you could play hands in his range from his perspective you could get some accurate numbers (Irisheyes has done some good EV calcs).

Hand 3). do you think 7-7 is going to call a river bet on that board? I would consider c/c'ing since you don't really get value from his likely range by betting (unless he is pretty bad lol). sick spot as played, i don't have a good answer.

Hand 4). probably b/f turn vs. most 100NL players - it makes the hand much easier to play as he will define his range for you. I wouldn't expect a typical 100NL player to raise you without K-x, and would just fold/call with a draw/weaker 10.

Hand 5). i don't like shoving that river at all. I think firing another bet on the turn though is good if your opponent can fold, as most of his range is weak K-x/A-x hands.

Played another sesh since my last post for -$98. Sadly im abit uninterested in poker at the minute, motivation is lacking which i find annoying and frustrating. So for now ive re-kindled my interest in playing FFXII on PS2 (since my xbox 360 has the rings of death which ive still to fix), im enjoying the game so ill try complete it and hopefully i can get the urge to play again. In a bit of a poker purgatory right now, also confidence is kinda shot.

well after a break from poker since last saturday where didnt play or study, browsing the forums was about the height of it, im really relaxed and life is good.

Played a sesh last night and down a buyin at 50NL. BR is 2.5K BTW, played 50nl just to stay relaxed and have some fun. lost 2 buyins quickly when got oversetted and another where my srt8 lost to a fishes str8. happy with my session and my play. ended up playing 18/14 over 331 hands but i did so much jumping arnd on the tables that when i found 2 good tables i was able to play 23/18 or so. its fun to pay looser at a lower limit. oh and only played 2-3 tables too which is nice and easy going and note taking is easier.

oh and im playing on Full Tilt Poker for now too, got $600 to clear and a RB deal for 27% or whatever it is everyone gets. Why is a euro playing a US site? meh i sick of crap software plus im not playing super high stakes plus i wanna get some bonuses cleared etc.

PLayed 50nl last night for -$25!!!! I made a big mistake then stopped playing. Im thankful I can control myself after i mess up and walk away when im pissed off.

Havent got the HHs with me but here are 2 hands, ill leave my fuck up till last.

#1 - My image was possibly a bit loose at this point but BTN was 7-8 tbling so im not too worried about not having position postflop. BB (who folded pre was a 54/10 so i also wanted to loosen up in CO to get him HU but he didnt concur). SB wasnt great stats wise preflop tho i cant really remember, something like 30/15 over small sample. I figured him a bad player basically.

    50nl effective stacks

    CO PFR 3.5xBB
    SB calls

    Flop

I c/b 3/4 PSB or so, he calls.

    Turn

turn goes check check - its got a good card to double barrel, ive a FD and getting c/r'd would suck immensely.

    River

Now Ive a flush, Opp checks, I shove roughly $35 into $8 pot.

I figure he will call with any Ace holding and its not likely he has me beat while nobody gives ppl credit for making a backdoor flush.

#2 - Opp is 24/20, SB is 54/10, little history with both but nothing huge or important here.

    60BB effective stacks

UTG 24/20 PFR 4xBB $2 (BTW i think 3.5xBB was his standard or it was all vice versa)
    SB called, no biggie
BB Hero AQo 3bets $9 - in hindsight maybe too small.

    Flop

    I c/b $14 into $19 pot ,Opp calls

    Turn

    check check

River - I honestly dunno what to do in this spot. I try for a SD but also planning on caling some bets.

I check, Opp shoves AI which is about 3/4 PSB.

The part im pissed off with is i thought about his range and how it crushed me and matched it up it his line and got my answer but I still CALLED. WTF, I really would like to know the psychology behind my thoughts when i call convincing myself ''ah he must be bluffing''

I was +$30 before his hand then I was -$30

Good session yday of $178 over 650 hands or so. Played well and heres a bluff that worked.

Opp was about 18/14 over 240 hands or so with decent aggression tho its probably bcoz he plays so few hands. He opens CO so his range isn’t really so tight IF he is positionally aware which I hope he is lol. I call preflop bcoz 3betting this is borderline in most cases and towards a tight player its bad. So I call for set value and am thinking of taking it further.
Flop is unlikely to hit his range very hard, only his overpairs do well here or sets, so I don’t believe my hand holds well to float OOP with the flush draw and the many overcards that can hurt if if call on flop, so I repop which is good vs his range (as sauce says).
Turn ok he called my bet which to me actually makes his hand fairly easy to read IMO. He has a decent overpair a big % of the time or maybe a FD Axs. Now th eonly way I can hope to win the pot, bcoz my hand is really crushed against his range, is to bet turn OOP. Crap thing about betting is its hard to get it in comfortably, pot is about $25 or so but my stack is $38. if I bet 18-23 and he calls im screwed and WILL have to give up on river or if he shoves turn, so I shove it all in now. It makes my situation easier to play and maximizes FE now since I don’t have to worry about bet sizes anymore. Also the turn card is a good card for me to bluff as its likely a card higher than his flop overpair. Im not trying to rep a K, am trying to rep a hand that can beat a K.

another session tonight for +$104 over 558 hands. i feel i played pretty well and incorporated some nice plays IMO be them standard or a little different.

    Some hands

#1 - Opp was very loose like 40/28 or so. So i called willing to play a flop with him and my hand holds well vs his range but i dont wanna 3bet as i think i lose value as i beleive he will stack off easily enough if we both hit the flop. flop was very weird but i dont beleive im in such a bad spot as what MADE hands do this seriously (i give him draws and air alot), turn bet was tough spot (opp has high AF BTW) so i call but will reevaluate on river, i could still be ahead. river is a sweet card so i call shove (now im putting him on 98 for 2 pair or Ax.

1). i might bet the river for less ($10-12) and fold if raised though checking behind seems okay as well. This guy seems like a super crazy maniac, so i'd be more worried that he hasn't gotten aggressive earlier in the hand.

2). bet the turn for sure, as played it sounds super nitty but i would consider check/folding the river.

3). raised out of position with a vulnerable made hand...

ISF and Massimo did a video and a spot a lot like this came up. Instead of felting on the flop they called with the intention of open shoving on a non draw completing turn. But, if this guy is the type to call his money in on the flop with an 8 out draw then your line is fine too.

oops i missed a set of hands... (in case it's confusing this post is r.e. your second to last post lol)

1). Fear the flop min raise! (i think it's a set a lot actually) There aren't really any good options for you here besides folding IMO. As played yea it's top two pair but all you beat is a bluff. You have to call now.

2). A-xs (x<10) is not a good hand to be the first to call behind with. Overcalling is fine, and so is 3betting :P The rest of the hand looks fine.

3). I think checking behind on the flop is better than betting and getting shoved on. You can also consider shoving over a turn lead if you check behind.

    Hand 1:
Not much you can do. Against a better player I would shove the river but betting or c/call seems fine too. I cannot find a fold here.

    Hand 2:
As played I would c/fold the river. Sounds nitty but this board hits so many calling ranges.

    Hand 3:
Call flop raise and open shove any non-club turn.

hand 3 is an easy felt dude, he has a draw or air, or worse hand too much given the texture of the board.

Im officially the worst poster ever. Im getting the poker bug back it seems after spending ages playing Mass Effect.

Shud have time to play again tonight. BR is at 2K!!!! Dunno whether to shot for 100nl tho, i cud go FR on EVP for easy money tho i dont think ive had good tilt control over the past month or two.
Jman: every time the action is to you, it's an opportunity for you to make the perfect play.

hmm Ive seen some people mention how 2007 treated them poker wise and reflected back on the year so ill give it a try.

Even tho i only have twice the BR i had when i started playing cash in Feb 07, poker has actually treated me very very well. I never broke the 10K BR (tho i wud of if i didnt withdraw), anyway I paid my car insurance of about 1.8K, bought a new real sweet PC for 1.1K and paid off my car loan of 4K.

Being a trainee accountant pays fuck all to begin with so paying off my loan which co-incided with getting a pay rise has sorted me out ALOT in real life (brag: im also finished with college coz i passed the last of my exams).

So 2007 was amazing though im disappointed Ive to start poker almost all over again in Jan 2008 but its not all bad since real life income is better so i can probably pay for stuff without touching the BR, i got all the material stuff i wanted so i shouldnt have to withdraw any time soon for anything.

I dont kno wot the plan is for 2008 but i wanna just get back to 100nl right now which is beatable, i just need to get back my tilt control and discipline.

ok played some hands tonight 460 to br exact at 100NL FR on EVP.

Went very well in my first serious session in a long time, +$245!!!

EDIT: another quick session not worth a post, lost $51 which im actually surprised by. i assumed i lost over a buyin. didnt run great but think i played well and didnt call off any chips which is good when playing against bad players.

My mind has been racing over the last few days thinking about postflop play in 3bet pots but before i get into a few thoughts and theories i wanna include my new year resolutions:

1 - learn 2 sentences of Irish each day (fairly easy since my gf is an Irish teacher). I find it very sad that I dont know my native language so ill give it a shot since all my exams are over.

    This thread may include all the phrases im learning as my notebook. Some so far (spelling isnt 100%);
#1 - Tá mé ag ithe toasta le h'im - I am eating toast with butter
#2 - Coach na suíl - Winking (Winking of the eye)
#3 - Ar mhaith leat dioch - Would you like a drink?

2 - Do a bunch of press ups, sit ups, dips each day (being doing that the last few days.

Ok back to poker!! I so wanna play postflop 3bet pots alot better so ill try focus on postflop bluffs. Id say i give up way too much when im calling and not getting enough value when ive the initiative.

    ISF Theorem:
If your range is ahead of your opponents range, you should bluff more often. If your range is behind your opponents range, you should play tighter.

I just thought about ISFs quote now which sums up nicely what i was about to explain.

Example: 100xBB stacks 6max and im 3bet OOP, by BTN while im UTG+1, preflop and I call.
Pot is 28bb, i check, opp bets 23bb, ive got 86bb left. flop has missed us bcoz i wanna go for bluff shove in my examples!!

NOTE: This will be very simple as Im not yet sure about adding extra math and permutations yet.

My range for calling a 3bet consists of QQ+,AKs,AKo (yea im super nitty)
Opp is a TAG and is striaghtforward postflop (now ill assume that my opp's at 50nl and 100nl arent playing postflop effectively and either play it too weak or are maniacs postflop). Opp range is TT+,AJs+,KQs,AQo+

    Again im calling with QQ+,AKs,AKo
    He 3bets with TT+,AJs+,KQs,AQo+

Flops: Our Equity based on ranges

    2s 4h 9c 63%
    Kd 7c 2s 75%
    Th Tc Ts 64%
    Js Ts 7c 54%
    Ac Ks Jh 61%
    Qh 9h 7c 53%
    7h 7s 5c 64%

Now say if opp is a LAG player then:

    He 3 bets 88+,A7s+,KJs+,QJs,87s,76s,AJo+,KQ
    I call with TT+,AQs+,KQs,AQo+,KQo

Flops: Our Equity based on ranges

    2s 4h 9c 57%
    Kd 7c 2s 64%
    Th Tc Ts 58%
    Js Ts 7c 52%
    Ac Ks Jh 61%
    Qh 9h 7c 59%
    7h 7s 5c 53%

Ok so in conclusion based on this tiny sample of hands the best flops to bluff shove given our range (note we are not dead vs his range IF we do get called tho i dont kno yet how to include it [ill check out taipans EV calc thing later]).

Conclusion: This basically backs up ISFs theory that our range is alot better overall than our opp's will ever be so we should be bluffing more. I know im giving up way too much be constantly folding instead of thinking about ranges and equity. Of course this is not to be done often at all and I prob should try and do i proper calc for myself to fully understand.

CLIFF NOTES: Side effect of above is high variance.
Jman: every time the action is to you, it's an opportunity for you to make the perfect play.

I'd add some more pairs to your calling range to the straightforward TAG's 3bets, though that's because i guessed you are assuming he will c-bet close to 100%. If that is the case, you could felt non broadway flops with these hands if he is c-betting with that high of a frequency and it would be super +EV.

cool thx Vi, ill defo consider that.

Played a sesh last nite with TJ railing. I ran hot at the start with quality holdings and spots but ended up BE but got a $20 bonus as my non playing profit.

Im gonna review my sesh later in work and maybe post some thoughts there. I practiced some squeezes and loose 3bets with some floats IP thrown in.

Played a solid sesh for +$61 over 430 hands which is 12bb/100

SOme hands: I cant exactly remember my reads but based on his range i cud 3bet him prefop. In hindsight I think i shud of bet turn instead of river to have the threat of a river shove but i wimped out trying to hit 2 pair or better and thinking he wont fold an Ace. maybe i could of got an decent Ax hand to fold but also i may of had to put my whole stack on the line. hows my river bet or shud i give up since he will call often (in hindsight damn)??

#3 - Opp is quite tight in EP so i choose not to 3bet him. when the flop came i decided that i wudnt float OOP on this board. there are alot of low PPs on my range i decided to try a c/r with the intention of folding to a shove. he called which is a little worrysome but it doesnt mean HUGE strength either. I decide to just check turn with intention of betting river if checked to, turn card is actually ok for my range. Opp checks which IMO means opp wants to show his hand down and is unlikely to stand up to a river bet. i put him on a mid PP since QQ+, AK would of played there hand by now. River is a good card again for my range since i cud hold AKs too, and i make a bet size that looks like a VB.

#4 - This was my first ever bluff shove. Opp had 3 bet me a few times already esp when i stole blinds OTB. I was willing to play the flop against him and i beleive his range is fairly wide, its possible I cud 4bet here too preflop. Im sure this guy was table captain b4 i joined, we ran the table th its crap i was OOP vs him alot. i moveed tables when the fish left.

    1st Block of Hands

1). I'd bet the turn since you would want to bet the turn with A-K

3). Raising to $10 preflop would deny set odds as well considering how light you are 3betting. I don't c-bet in RR pots, regardless of flop texture, when someone has coldcalled my 3bet without some history.

5). Raise the turn! He can't continue without K-x, and your range after calling his turn bet is very weak.

    2nd Block

    1). I don't like double barreling nits, so i don't like a triple barrel

2). 3betting the flop is an option, but if you don't do that you have to bet the turn to build the pot.

3). This is an interesting hand. I like c/r flop b/c turn versus looser opponents, but if this guy is pretty tight i think c/c flop b/f turn might be better.

    3(2)). lol you're not bluffing!

    4). Call the flop bet.

5). I wouldn't 4bet here with this hand, so yea calling is probably your best option.

Vi in response to your comments.

    Top thread

hand 1 - Yea you are spot on I shud of b/f turn. an error in my thinking, opp is actually getting to play his weak holding alot easier when i check turn and bet river.

Hand 3 - You really are gonna 3bet $10, its so small tho ive just remembered you have a habit of 3betting very little sometimes.

Hand 5 - yea i agree totally with your point. i did think of raising but didnt do it.

    Second thread

hand 1 - Well i was in deep after second barreling him so i opted to make a value bet bet size bluff lol. i honestly didnt think he would call it. uber TAGs would play alsmot all their holdings different bar Qx there which is what i presume he had.

hand 2 - yea probably shudve

hand 3 - opp wasnt loose if i remember, he wud be more tight than loose. since im OOP i opted for a c/r since there are too many cards that will hurt me, opp will probably play very str8 forward to a c/r plus i can lead for alotof scary turns instead of c/c'ing flop with no inititive on turn. what u think??? Plus I try not to float OOP plus board is so wet that if opp gets a good turn card and i check his 2nd barrels are super EV for him.

    Hand 3 (2) - huh? u saying i shud of bet yea?

Hand 4 - why call flop vs a loose aggr player when i dont like a ton of turn cards? shve chips down his neck since he 3bet range is very wide and my 3bet calling range crushes him. this is ok for my hand vs his range so i shove.

quick after session update. ran 17bb/100 over 966 hands for +$164 plus $20 bonus unlocked.

Biggest loser - i was surprised with his holding as he seemed to play 30/14 or so, i taut he was quiet at the table so i dunno what he was thinking.

no but i think your turn bet would be considered more for protection from draws rather than trying to fold out Q-x. i'd check behind on the river too

looking at it again yea i agree a flop check/shove is best. the other two big reasons i'd take your line though are because we aren't really c/c ing the flop with any other hands that often since we are usually check/shoving our good hands to protect our range when we check/shove with draws. also, check/shoving 10-10 on that flop widens your range that you can value check/shove in similar spots in the future.

    GOGOGOGO New thread title FTW!!!!!!

1000NL!!!!! Im working real hard on my game right now that i so think its feasible tho realistically it may take more than a year to do.

    2008 Goals:-

    Phase 1 - 200NL 6max at the very least

    Phase 2 - 400NL shots at $10K

    Phase 3 - 600NL shots at $15K

    Phase 4 - 1000NL shots at $25K

I think I can beat 200NL even right now tho i dont have the bankroll so ill just have to grind up the dough.

    GO GO GO GO
