Default How to Make a Metric Fuckton of Money in 2011

Step 1: Go download IceChat: IceChat IRC Client :: IRC Client Extra-Ordinaire :: The Chat Cool People Use. It's free and it's small and it doesn't have any spyware or shit like that.

Step 1.5: If you want to try to connect without downloading anything, you can go to http://www.thundercity.net/chat/ and after you log in and it connects type /join #flopturnriver

Step 2: When it comes up when you run it, on the left click the Add New button and put in irc.thundercity.net, then choose irc.thundercity.net from the list and click connect. After it connects, type /join #flopturnriver in the box and hit enter, and you're there.

Step 3: Talk about poker with people in the chat like myself, GrinderSchool instructors d0zer, m2m, and Carrotz, and a number of small stakes and mid-stakes players.

Step 4: Make a bunch of money and have stories to tell girls at bars and clubs about ptbbs and fpps.

IRC is the nuts, and while the forums are good, this is like 20x faster and more interactive.

One good way to get a taste of it is to lurk for a while. Just get in there and leave it running and come back to it and read through the chat every few hours. Good poker advice and good laughs guaranteed. Then jump in.

I've finally settled in, so kinda hoping to hang a bit myself, just to have poker conversations mostly to get back into the groove

I still have the old mIRC, is it worth downloading Icechat?

Probably not as long as it works. Some people were having trouble with mIRC a while back, etc.

Wow. This sounds kewl. I'mma go check it out. Thanks OP!

IceChat is cool. I hooked it up and saw you guys use weaktight to post hands, so I went over there and who is atop all the race leaderboards?! Wow, I remember spending days trying to get a decent score with that thing.

    edit: Spoonitnow, that's who!

Hey, when did we go metric?

Is IceChat free? Seems to me you have to purchase mirc. I use pigeon but sometimes it is a pain so may have to try IceChat if free.

No need to purchase it. It keeps working even after the "trial" is over.

This Purchase Mirc issue happened to me a few months ago.

the only thing that ever happens is sometimes instead of "continue" you have the "exit" option....just click exit and restart mIRC ...happens from time to time but is easily solved.

A lot of people (myself included) have gotten a different screen where it forces you to register or not use it anymore. Kinda lame considering I used the installation on my laptop for over 2 years before it did it.

I've visited IRC a several times in the last month or so. There are some cool people there to discuss poker with, but I'll be frank: there are also some jerks. I've observed people complaining about glass-tapping. Not at the tables, mind you, but in the channel itself. I have personally been mocked for discussing concepts that are apparently elementary. There seems to be a philosophy among some of the IRCers that there is too much educating of the fish going on.

I'm still willing to give it a chance. But if you want more people to visit, keep in mind that this sort of attitude will turn people away.

There's about a 99.99% chance that you misunderstood some piece of sarcasm that was thrown around about short stacked games, or that someone got bitched at for something they said to people at the tables and you didn't get the reference.

In other words, don't sweat it, and keep on keeping on.

    Also, post more hands.

    wow sick sample bro

what is that 5 min of a sample when the channel is open 24/7? I think you may be confusing the IRC with the 2+2 forums.

No, I've spent about 10 hours there actively. I also try to leave IRC running when I'm away so I can go back and read stuff. I've been using Mibbit though, which sucks, and crashes a lot. I'll try switching to Ice.

I'm not entirely dissuaded from participating. Guys like Spoon, Oskar, Carrot, and you (M2M) make it worthwhile. I'm just saying there will likely be people who give it a try and leave with a bad taste in their mouth. I like to think that I'm perceptive to humor and sarcasm on the internet. I really don't think that was the case in my bad experiences.

Most of the people I learned poker from were massive dicks. If you turn your back on assholes because you're oversensitive about the meanies on the internets, you're seriously limiting your educational opportunities.

As for there being a culture of not wanting to help the fish, that's just absurd -- a bunch of us make instructional videos aimed at newer players -- you just might not always find someone willing to discuss what you want to. I know I've tried to help even the most clueless fish.

Umm. I know that culture can seem mean. But honestly, if they weren't so "mean" it would never get through some people's head.

I can deal with flaming and trolls. I'm 25. I'm used to that on the internet. What I'm addressing here is elitism and stonewalling. Active discouragement of poker discussion. I didn't say it was a prevalent culture, but that mindset is certainly present to some extent, from my observations at least.

My feelings aren't hurt and I haven't given up on it. I'm in IRC right now.

I know I've ruffled some feathers by bringing this up. I'm not trying to shit on the channel. I appreciate that Spoon really seems to want more people to join, so I thought it would be helpful to shed some light on this. There will be people who join for the first time and get the wrong impression because of a few bad apples. I'm just trying to give a fair warning.

Honestly, I've been frequenting IRC for over a year now and I have this to say. Yeah there is some tough love, certain people are impatient and can be rude. That's life though noone has to give up their time to help newer players, but they do so getting the occassional bit of attittude is something you can jst shrug off and say w/e I'm learning.

I have no idea what this glass tapping shit is though. Maybe I missed the day this went on, but it NEVER happens. The whole point of irc is to help people out and get help yourself. It's a ladder of information passed down from rung to rung between players of a wide range of ability. There are like 800,000 billion fish out there and irc gets traffic of like 20 people on a good day. Why the hell would anyone care about "glass tapping" FTR is a small community and IRC an even smaller segment, trust me, no reg that frequents IRC cares about this. It's the interwebs and we can't police who comes in or not, wegive everyone a chance. I some dbag was going on about this let me assure you it was a one off and in no way reflects what this place is like.

As for "Eliteism", I'm not totally sure what you mean by this. If you mean the better players can be patronising or hard on beginenrs then yeah, sometimes, fair enough, they're not doing it to be cunts, but rather to make sure the point gets across. This is why I'm hard on people from time to time, simply because I don't think they'll fully take it on board otherwise. Some people have a great atittude to learning and there's no need to be hard on them because they soak up what you say like a sponge. I've watched spoon and m2m give guys advice for the last year and not once have I thought "wow he's out of line" if anything they're both very respectful. Yaawn can be a dick, yeah, but he doesn't mean any of it personally and again he's taking time out to give guys advice. If you ever feel like yaawn leaves you with a bad taste it's because he gets frustrated when people don't understand concepts because he really just wants to help and get people thinking about the right shit. He'll call you a dumb fuck for a lot of the stuff you say, but think of it as constrcutive criticism and not persecution. Getting pissed off at yaawn is like getting pissed off at the rain for being wet, rain is always going to be wet, but without it no plant life would grow, nam sayin'.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify what IRC is like and defend it because I do feel gryndowave's review to be unfair and pretty much inaccurate. Not saying shit like this wont happen ever, but it's so rare, and I don't get the eliteism thing at all.

You guys have obviously spent a lot more time in IRC than I have, so you would know better than me how things actually are. What I'm presenting is a perspective, albeit a narrow one, of how I perceived things. I believe that if new visitors join the channel at certain times when certain people are on, there's a good chance they'll come away with the same impression. But maybe not. Maybe I just happened to stumble across a few conversations that are completely uncharacteristic.

Then again, I'm not so sure. Last night a notable user was going on about how information is toxic and how the games would be so much better without sites like FTR and training videos. He was upset with me for the points I've made in this thread, but then proceeded to reaffirm them. That is the sort of attitude that I find unsettling, much more than the trolling and name-calling. Again, maybe that was out of character. People seem to think he's a great guy. He might have just been saying that because I tilted him or something.

If that is the case, and these incidents have all been weird anomalies, I regret that we got off on the wrong foot.

I wasn't in there for this, but the bold is true and I don't see how it can be argued otherwise.

For uber noobs (pokerwise and internet slang-wise) like I was (am), it was overwhelming as I didn't have a clue what anyone was talking about. I tried forever to figure out what "ldfo" meant but it should have been ldfo.

8 out of 10 lines were by Yawn. Once I ignored him it was easier.

Maybe I'll join later tonight as I haven't in a while. I might learn something...

Ya, I think my poker potential has been held back a LOT because I don't have anyone in person near my level to discuss poker or hands with in my area, so I should try to find other ways to fill the void and the Interweb tubes make it that much easier to do so.

IRC is a great way to learn. Sometimes people cuss you out and say you are worthless, maybe even for absolutely no reason. That being said, I guarantee you spending time in there will make you better.

After all, you gotta realize they are tutoring us fish for free.

There seems to be a philosophy among some of the IRCers that there is too much educating of the fish going on.

I'm still willing to give it a chance. But if you want more people to visit, keep in mind that this sort of attitude will turn people away.
<SrslySirius> No, I'm admitting that I was wrong.
<SrslySirius> Some crazy things were said when I was new to the channel and I misinterpreted them.

I'm trying to look into this. It's not an easy thing to get done.

Alright, I just gave that a shot. I do know that they got sick of name change requests several years ago, so I'm not entirely optimistic. But we'll see.

    Request denied, ldo.

Standard reason, same as it was years ago. Once you let one guy do it, everybody wants a name change.

Isnt this a human rights issue here ?

We live in a world where you can change your gender , Gays can adopt children etc.

A name change because "everyone will want to" seems unfair, I certainly wouldnt .

Is there an appeal process ? I hope so . In europe we have the court of human rights .

" The law throughout the United Kingdom permits people to change their name at any time and without any special permission or process. This applies to everyone, including people who change their gender." EHRC - Trans people: your right to change your name

Are you in the US ? DO you have human right groups ?

State laws can regulate name changes in the United States. Several specific federal court rulings have set precedents regarding both court decreed name changes and common law name changes (changing your name "at will").Name change - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What state are you in ?

We can't let you be gay bc then everybody would want to be gay.

lol wat. It's a messageboard, there are no rights.

Name changes are a privilege, and I think it's reserved for more well-known/connected people such as Bickles.

FWIW, most changes, such as bike's, were because their new name was similar. Sorry grny

So? That doesn't garner favor with the powers that be at FTR, does it?

Meh, I give up. If the admins say no, then I see no reason to pursue it further.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about this. Just for fun, maybe I'll try asking to have it changed to grny, which is very similar. I'm confident that it will be rejected.

Care to wager? I'll give you 3:1.
