the purpose is for the game itself to function. it has nothing to do with keeping certain thoughts from certain players private for the long term. even if it did have that purpose, it couldn't be successful since the information gets out at a decent pace in such a small pool. the notion that it serves long-term wolf purposes was indirectly emergent from norms of different ww communities, not by an adherence to the overarching purpose of the game.
we're evolving, we're making it better. years ago the mods just said "wolves have to find their own form of communication", which was mostly just cumbersome pm's. these were problematic because they didn't allow for supervision necessary to make sure there was no cheating. then after skype got bigger it became easier to use and mods were included in the convos. then an even easier format was found, quicktopic, that was less cumbersome and kept the roles even more secret (no more "hey this guy logged onto skype but he's never on omg is he a wooooolf") and made for easier oversight. after quicktopic became popular and dead threads became popular, we realized that we have these logs now, so we no longer have to discard wolf chat like we always did before. the logs keep the game funner for everybody and they don't reduce wolf abilities.
it also allows for greater oversight. it keeps the player pool less gentrified. look at how many various mods we've had since we started opening dens post-game. coincidence? maybe, maybe not. but you can guarantee that it's easy for somebody who never modded before to step up and do it when they read dens and see there's not much to it. had quicktopic been a thing from the beginning, it would probably have from the beginning been a norm that the dens are always opened post-game
these days, everybody is able to mod games. the community is tighter and people are more comfortable with the game
besides, like boog said, when he me daven and monstr were wolves, our den was all strategy. does anybody remember what the strategy was? hell, i dont. i only remember two specific things i did that ended up helping the remaining wolves in a small way, but i doubt anybody remembers them (jkds might because at the time he said he wants to do more of one of them). even then, it's not like im going to use them again or if i do it'll be easy to catch. gabe is right when he said that strategy is so dynamic that things are so situational dependent that we don't really even learn much from knowing what wolves did before.
