It's a beam of electrons in a tube with thin Neon gas to show where the beam is.
I'm holding a magnet outside the tube to make the beam curl around and back on itself.
This is called the magnetic bottle effect.
If you've heard of the Van Allen Radiation Belts around the Earth, this effect is related to how those are formed and sustained by the Earth's magnetic field capturing charged particles from the solar wind.
