.. and so it goes... up like 3.7k since Dec 30th. w00t. Unfortunately my hand count is going to hit a wall as real life wakes up again. I have a plan to stick with 100nl for a good long stretch, and not sweat trying to move up. I'm quite confident that my A game, albeit weak in many places, is good enough to beat 100nl for a decent w/r... perhaps even a good winrate. It's not good enough to beat it for 7.5ptbb/100 long term (<--- w/r over last 25k hands), but i don't need it to be.

I'm aiming to log 30k-ish hands per month, as this should be sufficient to keep 'Nova turned on through June and keeps the sexy rakeback coming in. There should be a half-dozen days throughout the year, where I am able to squeeze in some extra hands, so I'm not 40k vpp from hitting Nova for 09 once my carryover from 08 expires in July.

I also took out 2.5k to fund a trip for my family to some place warm. Pretty nice knowing I can actually use my winnings for the family's entertainment.

My biggest IRL goal is getting more sleep. I typically operate on 4-5 hours for weeks at a time. I realize some may be able to do this.. and believe me I've lived this way for roughly 4 years now. But I think it's bad... i feel very shitty most of the time. I'm more inpatient and unfriendly than I should be. My goal is to actually set a bedtime and do some reading for a bit. Not poker or fiction... more like stuff from work like research papers and such. Exercise will also be included, and I'm considering trying out a bit of yoga to help my back (which goes to pot on a regular basis).

Looking forward to a new year... heh.. this blog has ran for 1 y 4 d... i should've started it when i first joined.

I don't have a lot to report... I've gotten some sleep this week. Though I've been sick so that hasn't helped much. I've cracked 10k vpp for the month, but this is pretty atypical with most of play coming during winter break. I don't expect to have many months where I'm done by the 15th or w/e today is...

I've been pretty breakeven over the last 8k hands.. which is ok I guess... i think i've been playing less than optimal. I got to sweat a friend's HU action for an hour or so.. and really really got me thinking about hands and ranges way more than I have previously.

So while I felt like I was spewing plenty last night, and I got coolered a fuck ton... the incredible thing is I was +$70 on the day, thanks at least in part to being up 1.2 bi's in non-showdown winnings. Now, I probably could've been up on the day had I not contested any pots, and I may have been getting a lot of credit from regs... but it felt like I was actually playing poker... Any way...

So I've been crushed with work lately... but have had a unique opportunity to listen to some pokher videos on a commute to a off-campus class that I teach. I've mostly been checking out some HU stuff. I'd like to think that I it's possible for me to improve my play. That may sound like a cocky statement, but believe me it is not. I am not a thinking player in general, and have an immense volume of knowledge to learn if I'm ever going to be truly good at poker. But being someone who doesn't have endless hours to grind, chat and study, I don't end up thinking or learning about the game much.

I find the hours that I get to grind part entertainment and part escapism... it allows my brain the opportunity to 'turn off'... not that I don't think while I'm playing (about mundane and basic shit), but I do NOT think about my life's worries and concerns while playing, and that's very relaxing for me.

Anyway... for the past month or so I've tried to pay a bit more attention to table selection, since my un-thinking style requires bad players to profit. I tend to open a lot of new tables and wait for them to fill up. Thus improving my HU play would be a good thing... since lifetime I think i've donated $1k at 50nl hu.. which is plain embarrassing.

So recently I've had success by playing just 1 table and really trying to focus on ranges and player tendencies and it seems to be working better. +8 buyins in the last 1k hands i think... blah blah.. sample etc. The results aren't as important as having a good sense of where I am in many common spots. Reads that weren't coming or were half-crocked while 2-tabling seem to be much clearer at 1 table.

    /rant for now...

So up and down I go... +5 buyin sesh, followed by -8 buyin sesh... I'd like to actually post so HH's in here, on the off chance I could get some feedback about my play. But I also might just put that in the FR forum.. and link it here. I've been meaning to ask about playing medium pairs in the blinds for sometime now.

Bbickes berates (appropriately so) for my atrocious turn bets that look like b/f lines and all too often are b/f lines.. and I've had a horrible time with growing a huge vagina in pots where I have a big hand... and can't size a bet to save my fucking life.

So I only managed to accrue 5 buyins (thanks to an atrocious night of play on the last day of the month) since my 2.5k withdrawl. Meaning I'm taking out $250.. and the new baseline for the BR will be $7250. I ran like baby jesus last night.. and notched a +7 bi sesh, including a 366 bb pot.

Um... February has been a very off month.. job interview in NoDaK, plus a lot of IRL making things challenging to get in play. I think I'm ok with that overall.. i had been playing a LOT more than I really can afford time wise, so i just need to be comfortable with at the tables.

Typically when I'm getting in fewer hands I tend to overplay everything when I'm in play, and that usually doesn't work for shit... Case in point over my last two sessions i'm down about 10 bi's. I need to just chill out and move away from 24-tabling back to a more manageable 16-18 or so. I don't know if I actually play THAT much worse when 24-tabling, but I def don't have adequate time to make decisions AND table select during the session as much as I'd like.

Perhaps putting on some type of 15-minute timer that is a "OK.. dump the shitty tables and lets find some feesh"-like signal.

I think my roll is around $7.5k.. it looks inflated due to the $1k reload that I was able to nab in 2 parts.. after depositing the first half and having bickes tell me to email about picking up the 2nd half.. SHIP!.. Also have a sizable load in feeps... and about $1.2k in airfare receipts from recent trips that should work nicely.. and help the roll in this self-induced recession

LOL... Hey man... yes.. we old men need our sleep. Especially when we have the money to lie on... Check your private messages on here.

In grind news, I finished February down like $500 on the month. I basically got in the minimal hands to keep my 'Nova status in place and most of those hands were played poorly. I've been continuing to work on learning to play HU... which sounds hysterical given that in general i'm a 20-tabling fullring bot. If i want to continue to work at HU (which i do), I need to keep my thinking (for the time being) about the two games very separate. Eventually blending the two knowledge spaces will be crucial, but i play so bad as is... i can't expect to do it yet.

Assuming I could successfully blend them... i should be a quite formidable player, and not just an fpppro... but until that time, I will work and try to learn stuff.[/i]

First outstanding session in a month. Should've stopped at +8 buyins, but had the chance to play a complete fish HU... but didn't close done a dozen or more FR tables.. and ended only +5.5 bi's. Still booking a big win is nice for change.

So I continue to play b/e for the most part... and overall far less hands. I've been thinking a lot lately and I'm going to be taking April off from playing poker 100%. I think I've allowed most of my life to slip into a pile of shit. I don't exercise, I don't sleep well, I drink too much, I don't get enough work done... etc. This needs to change. I've tried (unsuccessfully) to monitor how much I play... but I basically want to play all the time. I don't know if I'm 'addicted' but i definitely have a compulsion to play and that's negatively impacting my life in other ways.

I'm going to finish up my 10k veeps this month, then taking off next month will be my "one failed month at keeping supernova" which means that so long as I don't miss any other months will be fine to keep it if I want to continue messing around with it.

I continually wonder if it would be far better for me to just switch over to FTP... I hate the software there, but due to that, I would almost HAVE to play fewer tables (a good thing), the fixed rakeback would mean that I wouldn't HAVE to play 30 hours per week to keep 'nova up and going... cuz i wouldn't have to worry about that at all... meh... i hate making emo posts, but I needed to put this out there for myself. I'm off to cut myself now.

if you're not making ~200k vpps a year at stars then the fixed 27% RB at full tilt is a better value. Plus with their iron man program and FTP's i will make right about 32% RB there this year.

For cereal?... hmmm... would this be true even for playing HU?

One of my main issues right now is that being on Stars I basically need to keep Supernova to make it worthwhile... and that's basically going to be impossible to do with the amount of time I can afford to spend playing. If I managed to remove that need from my current play I think that might help the compulsion a bit.

I got a great suggestion for coming back and really working on teaching myself to STOP playing after a small stretch.

So... as I mentioned previously I need to get life back to some balance. I'm going to take off the month of April, and starting in May I'll be playing primarily at FTP. I'm going to switch from 20-tabling FR to 4-tabling 6m and 1-/2-tabling HU... I'll start out a bit over-rolled... ($3k for 50nl - perfectly fine for 6m but maybe light for HU). I need to know that I can actually play those games successfully, before I jump up to higher stakes.

This means my family gets an influx of roughly $5k from my current bankroll, so we get to have some fun money for the spring (including a ballin' new gas grill!!, new bikes, new brewing equipment, etc.). We don't really have any debt, so this money is going to be my reward for all the time i've put into poker. Thanks FTR!

I will have one last harrah tonight... going to 14ish-table some full rink. I'm also looking to move $3k from Stars to FTP, if anyone here needs to flip some money, just ship a PM. Thanks.

    The final night of grinding was fitting... after about 600 hands I was ready to run into traffic. But all's well that ends well, {acronym Renton hates}

I may keep updating this as the next 4 weeks should have some good life changes... This past week I ran roughly 2.3 miles on 3 different occasions and lifted weights as well. I weigh roughly 220 at the current time, and expect to drop at least 10 pounds in the next 4-5 weeks. I realize that might seem like a lot, but I'm nearly 100% sedintary so a dramatic upswing in exercise should see some serious changes.

Well, one week of no poker pretty much sucks. I cracked a bit yesterday and hopped on IRC just because I miss all the humorous chatter, and busy irl kept me from the gym most of the week. I did get in a 2.6 mi run this morning, followed by an ass-kicking circuit workout. I'm going to be focusing a LOT on back, core and legs; more than I ever have in the weight room.

I hit 215lbs for the first time in 6 years earlier this week. My weight tends to fluctuate by 5 lbs from day to day, but 215 is a new low in a long while. I'd like to see me get down to 205 or so.. but if I'm actively lifting weights.. it's going to be hard to get below that. The cool thing is.. I'm not really looking to my body weight to tell me about my fitness. It's not a productive way to measure my success. I'm going to look at distance per run, and # of workouts I get in per week.

Diet-wise, most of the food I eat is quite healthy. We simply don't buy junk food of any kind at the grocery store and we don't eat out very often; so we eat food that we have and I just need to constantly work on eating less per meal (especially dinner) and not snacking in the evening.

I have a couple of books I'm planning on reading, a paper, and a grant to write. Plenty of things to take up poker time, I just miss the chat.

Well tomorrow is May 1. So my self-ban from poker is over... not really sure what that means for me. I'm not going to be restarting my massive multi-tabling of full ring. Although I am a winning player at 100nl... i just can't do it anymore. I've specified why in previous posts, so I won't revisit it... but I feel like I have roughly 3 options:
    - Do I convert my cash games to something like 1-2 times per week 6m and HU play with ~1 hour type sessions?

    - Do I abandon cash play all together and just aim to play a few ftr mtt's now and again?

    - Or do I just stop playing online poker completely...

I've been thinking about this for a month and I just can't decide. I'll update as I think about this more...

So after a great deal of thinking.. It's quite obvious I have an inability to choose healthy options (exercise, sleep, reading, time with wife, or spending time with irl friends) over playing poker and a number of other unhealthy choices.

I've spent the last 4 years (4-year anniversary in 12 days), comparing my success and failures against individuals who for the most part have more flexible time constraints in real life. With two small kids, wife, and, what should be a pretty time-intensive full-time job (faculty member at research-intensive school), my free time is very limited. On average, I should get ~1 hour per evening, and if I choose to play poker, I'm choosing NOT to get exercise, play guitar, read, etc. A more balanced individual might be able to only play 30min and then stop, or play once or twice per month, but I tend toward compulsive behavior quite easily. By opening the door to playing sometimes I frequently make bad decisions of when it is or not appropriate to play.

If any are curious, this isn't a decision based on poker play; that is, I'm still playing as good/bad as I always have. I tried to switch to hu and 6m on FTP, so I wouldn't have as much external pressure to keep Supernova Status on Stars... but that really didn't change anything. So that's all I got for now.

    BR: $0.

Hmm, so I've thought of bumping this several times, and although I don't have much going on I thought I'd post a couple of things.

Having quit in June, I didn't play a single hand for nearly 3 months. I only had $.70 in my account, but due to a few long overdue pay backs from neverbeg (or parttimepoker i guess)... somewhere around the end of August I had $45. So I thought, why not, let's play some $2nl for fun.

If you like whopper jr.'s $2nl is quite entertaining. It's easy to see why people can print money at $2nl and not at $5nl, though. Yes, people are uber-retarded at both... but there are far more "any two will do retards" to nut campers at $2nl than $5nl. You can "learn" to play a winning style @ 2nl that is way to loose and involves going to showdown too often with weak holdings and will lose you money at any higher stake.

I've considered asking for a stake vs. just grinding up myself. Although it's tempting to secure a stake for all my play, I just don't see myself playing that much. I don't really want to be responsible for anyone else's money or feel like I need to play with any kind of frequency.

In terms of a plan, I'm going to stick with 4-tabling 6m... playing 20m, 210 fpp sats to the Sunday 1/4 million as I go. I will move up stakes when i get 12 buyins for the next level and move down if I drop to 9 buyins at my current stake.

It's aggressive, but I was a long time (albeit small) winner at 20-tabling $100nl fr... so I'm adequate at many of things most n00bs are not... though I have lots to learn about playing 6m obv. I likely will wait for 15 buyins for 50NL and 20 buyins for 100NL... and 50 for 200nl.. but let's be serious, that is likely never to happen.

why the fuck do I do this to myself... i hate hate hate hate FTP so fucking much... hate the software, hate the bet pot button, hate the cards, hate the lobby, hate table sorting options, hate the way you need to sit in with the blinds... hate everything.

There is no possible way that the slight increase in rakeback could possibly be worth the uber tilt that FTP puts in me... holy shit.

interesting. Having finally sampled Stars I no longer believe the hype about either software platform being better. I prefer the FTP client app. for now.

anyway - hope this helps some:
Cards - go for the simple four colour deck option and see how that feels. Turn off all the animations etc. Turn off avatars.
bet pot button is only a problem cos it helps the fish play better, but it also helps to play bigger pots against these same fish.
re the lobby, anything in particular? filters and custom options may help?
Table sorting options? - click the top of the list to sort by whichever of pot size/players/wait-list/table type/players to flop/ = this seems better than on stars - but maybe cos i haven't figured out the stars lobby properly.
I'm not sure what you mean re the blinds? you can tick the autopost box and click "wait for big blind" when the option flashes up. Uncheck it when you're winding down your session.

a couple of other tips regarding player notes that may be useful:
    1) start writing the notes in the FTP notes facility, not in HEM/PT3
    2) to add notes on a player when they are not playing -> Ctrl-F, enter player name, click on "player notes"
    3) you can then see these notes when you're scrolling through the tables in the lobby, colour code the notes to tag-the-fish.

oh, and maybe you know already? Truly Free Poker training and free cardrunners/stox is something you should look into

I realize there are certain people that like it, d0zer... but I do not. So happy back in the land of Hypersimple layout. *sigh*....

I like the stars software, it's got a nice clean/crisp look and feel. The combination of simplicity in both appearance and sound is quite attractive. The animation of tilt's software tilts the shit out of me. It feels like being trapped in a cartoon.

up down up down up down... apparently my skill level is insufficient (or at least inconsistent enough) to beat 25nl... BR graf looks like this: \/\/\/\

i'm guessing 90% of my problem is not folding enough... i don't think it's a problem of being passive and missing value.. but the CALL button is so sexy... so is the RAISE button. They call to me... "PUSH ME!!! OH ME GEE PUSH ME HARD!!" um.. o'tay!!.. BAM BAMB BMABMAB...

    /me waves good-byes to manies...

you want directions to the fold button you dumb fuck? it's not that hard, see that well worn button that is marked :call: ? Glance left a little. See that shiny, brand new, obviously unused button? that's the fold button. You should try it sometime
    but
yes, i know that when you press that button you don't get to see villain's cards, and maybe you just got bluffed. I don't care. Are you in poker to make money, or to catch occasional bluffs?
Right, you found the button then? now ffs use it!

so i dl'd Table Ninja... and proceeded to nut in my drawers.

8 buyins @ 25nl playing sporadically in the last couple of days... a couple buyins last night at 50nl.

I joined 50bb min only tables last night, and pretty sick nit-fest for 25nl. But still profitable if I learn to not run the kang and kang into the ace and ace... I was pretty baffled the normal or fast tables where 7/9 players 20bb'ing it at 25nl. Seriously? Starting new tables is something i thoroughly enjoyed back in the day, and is still highly profitable.

    anywho...

    BR $830

<3 TN, but I am very hopeful that i've finally gotten it through my head that I can play VERY profitably on 10-14 tables, and very unprofitably on more than 14 tables. It's not the difference between a decent w/r and a lower w/r, it's the differnece between a decent w/r and a garf that looks like this: \ . I wish TN could auto table-block me after 14 tables with a pop-up message of... "oh hi der kingest of nats... i'd like to let your play moar tables but u suck at pokers so fFFFffUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

The 280 fpp 6m hyper-turbo satties to the sunday 1/4 mill guar (wtf kinda bullshit long ass name si sthat!!!) are pretty fantastic. I'm so dumb to not keep track of the number played and such.... but I'm quite certain I'm way >>>>> $0.0162/fpp on them.

    BR 1100

So an odd thing has occurred recently. Most of my success in poker has come playing loltables of nitring... fistpumping over feeps and playing 13/10 at my absolute craziest, but having stretches of 11/8 as well.

I'm on a pretty solid heater in the last week from 1100 down to about 850, up to currently $1400. Unless something gets eff'd i should hit platinum star this month... and if heater continues shots at $100nl... i'm still embracing ge00/bb BRM, so 18 buyins is MOAR than enough for me to consider.. and if I drop to $1500 i'll move down.. no worries. 100nl veeps wtfpwn 50nl veeps so i'd rather get there sooner than later.

yeah.. well, this didn't happen... I just didn't have time to play at all, and when I did I leaked money. I'm running like Jesus and playing really bad. Station ftl...

IRL is going to get crazy busy as I have to give talks at 3 conferences in 1 month's time (starting 2 weeks from now).. typically one needs results to give a talk, and currently all i have is a lot of data... so play time will suffer... oh well. I will continue to enjoy playing whenever i get the chance. Makes for a pretty gay blog though.

So poker stalled big time for me in the past months. Playing rarely and having various HEM and TN issues when I did. IRL is ever busy, conferences are bagged up for now, but 3 more this summer, plus grant writing and paper writing to do.

It's unlikely that I'll post poker at all (because I'm not playing), but I might post irl updates as stuff gets rolling for work. As part of my contract I have the fall off from teaching so tomorrow is my last class I teach until January of 2011. But by then, I need to submit 3 grants and at least 3 papers.

Paper #1 got borked due to a confusion in deadline but needs to be re-drafted and submitted. Grants #1 and #2 were small but both shipped. Am currently working on massive Grant #3.

Have played a bit... was on fairly awesome heater and pissed it down my leg last night playing tired and stupid. Unlucky as well, but bad luck always seems to happen when playing badly...

Am 2 months into teaching and achieved nearly all goals for grants and paper.

Bought a PS3 in October and haven't played a lot poker since then. It's worth noting that my BR had been floating around $700 or so for several months. But something amazing happened in December, for the first time in my life... I donked my roll. I had many feeps and money from FTR FF and such to get me back to where I could play a little bit, but I have never done that ever, in 5 years of playing. Pretty embarrassing. I just feel I need to own up to it publicly. I've been strongly considering going back to my roots yet again (after a year break see above) and play some nitring. BR is $200ish currently.

Life balance has been pretty win lately, at least personally. I bike to work year-round for daily exercise and recently bought an exercise ball for home and work. I also picked up some exercise bands for home and work as well. Sure it's not as good as blah blah blah, I'm well aware, but I simply wasn't going to the gym and don't have the time, but 10 minutes a day on one muscle group, with lots of crunches, plus just lots of sitting while I am at work and while I play ps3 has made my body feel better than it has in years. Weight-wise I'm regularly at 210 and even dipping below that on occasion. My body is looking the best it has in more than 10 years.

I've been regularly playing guitar for the past 18 months and while I wouldn't say I'm good, I'm definitely better than I ever have been. I need to take d0zer's advice and push myself to learn new songs that require picking (a la most Jack Johnson songs etc).

One of the greatest areas of achievement in my life is so un-baller it's hard to post on FTR. I've become a home cleaning machine. I set-up a system that is sustainable for me. Identifying a small cleaning task each day that is on a two-week loop. It's incredibly satisfying to actually stick with it. I just started my 5th two-week rotation.

I praise you for the whole cleaning thing because I'm horrible at keeping up with it.

As my life follows the academic year, it is time for all the New Year Resolutions to kick in. Work things are going reasonably well, and have recently started getting back into really working out. The biking definitely helps a lot for minimal maintenance, but joined the gym on campus and can workout for free if I attend 12 times per month.

I'm actually following some fairly basic exercises, and for the first time in my life, I'm trying dead lifts. This is pretty much all due to Lukie (and probably Jyms, et al) who are the people I recall pimping this particular lift. I had never done it before... and after a few very painful days, I'm feeling strength in my legs like I haven't felt in 10+ years. TY FTR!
