Default Hand review: Did I make the right play here?

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (6 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

    SB ($2.02)
    BB ($0.93)
    UTG ($6.30)
    Hero (MP) ($4.77)
    CO ($6.77)
    Button ($0.66)

Preflop: Hero is MP with 10, 10
    1 fold, Hero bets $0.08, 1 fold, Button calls $0.08, 2 folds

    Flop: ($0.19) 8, 3, A (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $0.04, Hero calls $0.04

    Turn: ($0.27) Q (2 players)

I'm guessing he had an A.

On the flop, I most certainly had done a near pot sized Cbet to represent the A , I would also check my HUd to see how often I was cbetting and how often the BB folds to a cbet and check my notes to see any there was any other info I could gather up for good folk at FTR.

Hard to run a showdown line out of position.

That said, I run call/call/call lines in spots like this from time to time in hyper-aggro online games and it's pretty spiffy.

bet the flop or check/fold IMO...

PREFLOP. Pretty standard ... like it.

FLOP. This is where things get tricky. There are several ways that I would consider playing this hand.

    ------Four options
    1. Make a probe bet CB of about 1/3p. This is best when your opp don't know you -- be aware of the danger of revealing to much about your hand. Fold to a raise.
    2. Make a normal CB. Fold to raise.
    3. Check with the intention of calling one smallish bet. Hoping to pick off a bluff.
    4. Check fold.

I most like options 1 and 4, especially against straightforward opps. Option #1 gives your opp the opportunity to fold, will likely smoke out an A, and decreases the likelihood they will get bluffed. Option #4 is good against tight passive opps who would never bet without an A. I most like options 2 & 3 against tricky or agg opps.

Against stronger opp (higher stakes) I suspect that you will need to worry more about how the way you play your hand reveals the strength of your hand.

You decide to check call. OK. Sounds like option #3 above -- which means if he bets again we are folding.

TURN. OK well now I hate my hand. He probably has an A, and the additional overcard only makes matters worse.

Check fold. He probably has an A. I like your turn fold.

OTOH, your check on the flop may have shown weakness, enticing him to successfully bluff you. His flop bet was awfully small -- maybe a bluff, maybe a scared A, maybe a suck bet hoping to entice a call with a strong hand (AK or better).

I most like option #1 above.

just b/f the flop like 14c or c/r that 4c gay bet to like 22c... no point in letting his overcard hands qj kj kq etc draw to second pair... as played folding turn is fine

It achieves several goals. First, it makes it less likely that your opp will bluff you after you check. Second, it gives other hands that hate the A an opportunity to fold (JJ for example). Sometimes your opps are looking for an excuse to fold. Third, against straightforward players it makes a raise easy to interpret they have the A ! That's important when your goal is fold to a value bet rather than a bluff. Fourth, it is a deep value bet against loose players who are either on a draw or who are calling with worse hands (for example smaller unimproved pocket pairs).

The major disdadvantages are a) revealing too much about the strength of your hand to strong opps; b) running the risk of only getting a call when you are beat.

Stats + reads are very useful here, did you notice anything about him?

Against an unknown I'd b/f 0.14c on the flop.

Cbet flop obviously. You may take it down and if you don't you may get a free turn and or river card. Pretty easy fold if he raises your cbet.

if villain is unlikely to raise the flop with a flush draw, which is quite likely at 2nl, then i think bet/fold is the best line to take. if he smooths the flop then the way we think he plays his one pair hands/flush draws on the turn will determine the best play. ie if we know he raises all aces and smooths all draws (this is purely hypothetical) then we can safely b/f again.
