In my book there are three very basic concepts every new player should fully understand.

First, gain an appreciable understanding of the advantage and disadvantage of you position both before the flop and after the flop.

Second, limit you starting hands based on how your position will be affected once the flop comes.

Third, and probably most importantly, learn to compute pot odds quickly. Although implied odds are an important concept the are far less meaningful that understanding the concept of computing basic pot odds because implied odds are pure speculation and may never come to being if your opponents dont cooperate with you plan and fold or check to you.
