Default (Poll) Which book should we do first?

I lean, personally, toward Theory. HOH is a strictly NL book, whereas Theory is multifaceted. I think as a first book, we'd get more out of theory, and help more people. Though, HOH is certainly worthy too. Up to you guys.

Theory of Poker is far too advance to be a beginner's first read IMO. Its a very abstract read.

A fair (and arguably true) point. Would you suggest something not included in the poll?

I think the first book one reads should be specialized. SSH for LHE and HOH for NHLE and tournaments. HOH also, despite its subject matter, helped me tremendously with NLHE ring.

Once a newb gets specialized in a certain type of poker and learns the scientific and mathematical concepts on an intermediate level, I think TOP is a great book to branch out to all the other poker formats with.

Voted HoH1, but not sure what you guys are planning to "do" with this book? Discuss it here? Are we supposed to read it or will we get a summary..

I think Renton has a good point. Consider it in your voting. Makes no huge difference to me.

Took the words right out of my mouth, when I started poker I read theory 1st but was really interested in strictly NL, so the book threw me for a loop. I think harrington is best to read until you get experience

I'm seeing a swing in momentum here. If anyone that previously voted for theory wants to change their vote, let me know. Poll will run through Saturday morning.

a chapter a week? i read HoH1 in less than 2 days. and i think theory of poker would probably create better discussion than HoH. SSH then ToP then SS2 then HoH1 + HoH2

right thats what I was getting at in the other thread, a chapter a week is a very slow pace and will take months to just get through the book. I think the best way would be to split it up into maybe 4 or 8 parts and then have a weekly discussion, anything longer and people will get bored with it. I personally would like SSH because its geared towards beginners and most of us have read HOH

I'm open minded. I'll put a vote up for the pace. Let's settle on a book first.

One thing that you might want to consider (in case it hasn't been mentioned) is that HoH is based on tournament play. Not sure how relevant that would be to those of you who are strictly cash game players.

HOH1 is very pertinent to cash game play. Harrington's style is a very solid, tight, style which transfers to Ring very well. As I mentioned in my earlier post, HOH1 improved my cash game play significantly, probably even more so than my tournament play.

I'm interested in our little book club, I wonder if we'll have any pretty girls join.

I'm a limit cash player, so a book on tournament NL play would be of no immediate use for me. I vote for SSH. I've heard lots about it, enough to purchase it, but haven't read it yet.

Maybe we can run two book clubs, limit and no-limit?

    Thx,

I say we do SSH and HOH1 first and flip a coin over the order in which we do them. It would do a lot of good for our NL players to learn some limit theory, and vice versa.
