If you want the movie to play off the dvd-r when you put it in a dvd player like a normal dvd, it needs to be converted ("transcoded") into mpeg form and authored with an authoring app. A copying program like nero just moves the file to your disc like any other media. It won't author it like a dvd.

I'm not familiar with consumer-grade authoring apps, though.

DVDShrink is a free program. It reads the DVD and writes an image to your hard-drive. You can then use Nero to burn this image onto the DVD.

Most movies are double-layer so they wouldn't copy to a normal DVD-R anyway. DVDShrink also compresses so the resulting movie will fit on a single DVD (with a slight quality loss).

He has a movie on his computer that he wants to put on a standard-play DVD. Not make a dupe of an existing DVD movie.

In my nero I have a DVD-video option. It pops up a window that has two folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. It says to copy video files into the VIDEO_TS directory. I've never tried it, but good luck.

There's also an ultra cheapo method which is entirely free...

If you scrap CCE and go with QuEnc instead its totally free. There is a loss of quality - for the DVD I burned you can see some pixelation at some points during the movie, but the overall quality is not bad. I dunno about any other way, but this way involves converting the file (in some way, shape or form I don't entirely understand) which takes around 12 hours or so. Once its all converted use old Nero and burn it to a DVD-R.

I'd be interested to know how long ULead DVD Moviefactory takes to burn a DVD...

I'm not actually sure how long the separate steps take b/c I don't know very much about DVD burning in general. From the method I linked to, the first step (DVD Decrypter) is quick - around 10 min or so. The converting part (don't know specifically which program it uses) takes the 12 hours. The burning with Nero is quick too. Hope this helps...
