I agree with you. The bet was spur of the moment - I initially called in looking to hit a better hand (two pair, straight, flush).
and yes Ender is right on the money...you can't bluff a short stack
I wasn't trying to bluff the short stack. Did you notice my hand was better than the short stack's? I got sucked out on. That's not a bluff. Not only was my hand better, I *knew* it was better when short stack called. I was *hoping* that the short stack would call and everyone else would fold. The outcome of this hand was exactly as expected, except they hit their 6 outer.
In this case I would have either folded or reraised pre flop
You're probably right about that, if I'm looking to play for a pair. Usually when I play small suited hands (connectors or gapped cards) I'm not trying to flop a low pair and win that way, I'm trying to get a monster and destack at least one other player. If I can come up with a straight, flush, or two pair - that's the kind of hand I'm talking about. This particular play of betting the middle pair was spur of the moment and I don't usually like to do it (because frankly, it's pretty dumb in a large field like that). But in this particular case I was right - no one else had anything, and my only caller was unpaired.
To sum up - I know my play here wasn't optimal by any means, I was just having some fun. It was a spontaneous attempt to pull a Rippy mid-hand. When I called pre-flop, I wasn't planning to go that route; the opportunity just presented itself and I thought it sounded like a good time. Didn't work out, but it doesn't especially bother me either.
