Default How do you avoid this play?

Hi! I just had this happen to me and I would like to hear some opinions as to avoid this from happening in the future.

No limit holdem small stakes tourney style.5 people in the game, all about even stacked.

Im big blind with j-8 off, 2 people limp in , I check.Flop is 8-J-8.
First bettor bets, next foldsI raise double the bet.
Next card is Ad....no flush possibilities.
He bets, I call trying to slow play my boat. I figure he had A-K or some high pair with the 8's.
Last card 2 off, so no straight or flush possible.

    He goes all in....

Ok so I called and saw his pair of jacks for the jacks full to beat my 8's full.

What can I do to avoid losing all my chips in this type of situation? And those of you who say lay it down, in this situation do you think you can lay down a full house? Please post comments since I want to learn from this if thats possible. Thanks!

When you think you have the nuts and are beaten from the beginning, it's very difficult to know what to do. I would have pinned him on an 8, notably since he didn't raise pre-flop. I'm not saying you played perfectly, but that no matter what you did you probably were screwed there. He was gonna go all-in, and you were going to call.

I don't think there's anything you could've done to avoid that. If JJ hadn't limped, I'd say fold PF, but that's the best flop you could have hoped for with that hand.

I certainly would have been laughing when he pushed into me. And then cried when I saw he had the bigger full house.
    If I had a hammer
    I'd drop in the morning
    I'd drop in the evening..

Hard to fold. With smaller boats, you need to be careful especially out of position.
Is that guy still part of the forum??

I always say: you raise until he re-raises, then you check or call until you lose. That's it. You just can't fold hands like that. Maybe if you know your opponent really, really well and get the biggest tell of all time off of him... otherwise, you just try to minimize the damage if you think it might be coming.

I might have called the flop and bet big on the turn/river. Not raise the flop, call the turn... Anyways, those hands are destined to lose all your money....

You're going to have to pay him off, especially since he limped his PP... Very very rarely can you get a read good enough to pin a person on a higher boat.

My guess is you had sucked out a few hands before after making a bad call and the gods were punishing you.

I think you MUST get your money in with this hand... imagine if you'd kicked it in and he'd shown AA or something? You'd never be able to forget it.

To me this is a lot like picking up KK when someone has AA... not a bad beat obviously but still, there's nothing magical you can do to avoid it, nor should you feel any shame IMHO busting out.

Not even Phil "brilliant laydown" Hellmuth coulda put that hand down. Nothin you can do about it.
