Another Pocket Pairs Questions
I was playing late last night and had been doing pretty well for me. I was up about $20 in the first hour but then had pocket A's broken by a two pair flop. Why the guy called me pre-flop raise with K6, I'm not sure, but he was there and the flop made his two pair. I was out of position on him so I check the flop, he checked behind me. And then called my bets to the river. That's not the hand that's bugging me right now. But that pretty well ate up my gains for the session to that point.
Shortly after that I was dealt pocket jacks. The first to act raised $4. Normally, I'd fold JJ to that raise, but this guy had no other pre-flop raise. He either fold, checked, or raised $4. Earlier in the session he raised $4 pre-flop with pocket 8's that happen to hold-up to the river (Not against me). So, I put him on a good hand not necessarily a great one, but probably pocket pairs of some kind.
Here is how the hand played out:

What gets me is the check on the flop and then the size of the raise on the turn. I checked to him on the flop when the A showed up. My bet on the turn is weak, but I wanted to see how he'd respond. The re-raise just seemed wrong to me -- too large for him to want me to call it, but large enough that if I do and he's on KK or QQ then he's screwed.
Well it wasn't worth the $8 for me to find out especially after the $15 loss on the pocket A's earlier. So I laid it down.
