I don't think Stud is ever spread at PL or NL. You'll usually find it played at spread limit in casinos, say $2-$5. Online though, it seems to be just limit. I've played a little the past couple of days with some success at .25/.50 on PokerStars. People love to chase of course. I haven't read much strategy, so don't count on this for any real help.
Some good starting hands that I've seen:
- Three suited cards, as long as there are none of that suit showing, or maybe one showing. If the three suited cards are all low (and your playing Hi/Lo), that's also good of course.
- If I only have to pay the bring in, I'll play a low pair, say 484, as long as there aren't any eights or fours showing. I've been dealt numerous times already a high pair in the hole, and three of a kind a couple of times. The high pair in the hole without any of the other two of that pair showing is great.
- I don't try to go for high straight draws too often, while you do have 4 more cards to get, usually some of the cards you need are already out there.
- I believe the most basic rule is that you don't feel you're a favorite after fifth street, fold.
- And the second basic rule, if you can't beat what someone is showing, fold.
I think one of the great things about Hi/Lo Stud and Omaha is that many times, you may not have the hand right now, but you're a favorite to win the hand. That doesn't happen too often in Hold 'Em.
Lastly, I probably don't know what I'm talking about at all, I know Fnord has played some Stud before, he may have some better strategy or at least some place to read some more about it.
