Default Call or raise? Raise size?

Villain is 13/9, 3bet 5%(19) cbet 100% turn bet 100% Agg 11 only 56 hands though. Seems decent but I've not seen him show down anything yet.

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (8 handed) - PokerStars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

    CO ($11.12)
    Button ($10.15)
    SB ($20.92)
    BB ($4.04)
    UTG ($10)
    Hero (UTG+1) ($23.02)
    MP1 ($7.37)
    MP2 ($10)

    Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with A, K
1 fold, Hero bets $0.40, 4 folds, SB raises to $1.35, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.95

I just call pre because I have no further reads on him besides my HUD and I decide to play it a little safe. See a flop and see how we go.

So first question.........should I be 4betting and if so to what size and who is calling or folding if he shoves or 5bets large?

Being 13/9 I put him on JJ+, AQs+, AKo. 3bet of 5% means he could be 3betting a bit wider but I don't have a large sample so I'm happy to err on the side of caution.

    Flop: ($2.80) J, A, 8 (2 players)
    SB bets $1.65, Hero??

I expect the cbet but the sizing was a bit strange being not much more than 1/2 pot. I couldn't decide whether to raise or not. His Agg and turn barrelling tendencies had me thinking just call and give him some rope to fire off on the turn. On the other hand I've got a good hand and want to get the money in. We are both fairly deep so to get stacks in by the river(if it's going to happen at all) I figure I need to raise here.

So if you're raising what size would you make it?

Given stats/read I would give him enough rope to hang himself. Since we didn't 4-bet (I think that's OK, btw) I wouldn't be super excited to get ~180 BBs in postflop vs. a TAG.

What concerns you about this bet sizing?

What worse hands do you suppose he's stacking off here with after he 3bet your UTG+1 open???

Not so much a concern as just an odd bet size. He 3bet pre to 13.5bb then on the flop only bets 16bb which is barely more than half the pot. I had noticed he generally seemed like a 70-80% psb kind of player on the flop so when he did something different I noticed it. My gut instinct was he didn't like the A.

Well at these stakes KK and QQ are both possible though unlikely if he is a decent player and not much else. The fact I didn't 4bet would make a lot of people convince themselves I didn't have KK+ or AK.

Having said that it is far more likely this guy takes a second stab if I just call whereas he would never be stacking off with worse. So with hindsight a call seems the much better option.

Many people call 3bets with AK, esp with position. so I don't see how it would convince anybody to take it out of your range imo.

You thought he was afraid of the A so when you flop top pair you... raise? I don't follow your logic at all.

yeah you nailed it. Given that he likes to double barrel, making him fold QQ is a bad idea.

Well I never said logic was my strong point. And I said my "gut instinct" was he was afraid of the A. I'm trying to learn not to let my gut make my decisions for me.

In my admittedly very limited experience most don't just call with AK, they jam it in pre. A good player shouldn't take it out of my range simply because I called but a bad player can often find reasons to call rather than fold on the flop.

My sample on the guy was small so I figured he could have been 3betting with worse A's pre than I gave him credit for and would call a flop raise, also he might have peeled off the flop with QQ-KK where as after a flop call he would probably c/f the turn to any bet I made.

As I said, it's clear to me now a call would have been the better play.
