    Default Hello and book recommendations

    Hello FTR,

I've been getting harrassed by Petulie and Carroters to stop lurking and post something for months now, so here we are. I'm one of Petulie's 'poker babies', and have been learning(incredibly slowly) under the ever watchful eyes of Petulie and Carroters. Been playing 2NL with a spot of 5NL thrown in, pretty badly. Not helped by my tendency to get drunk every time I play. Anyway, with the help of those guys, and some of the excellent articles I've read on here, I'm slowly getting better. Now I've finally got a HUD set up, I'm looking forward to posting some of my dumbass hands for advice/laughs. I've been assured that there is no better place to learn poker than this very forum, however, I am an uber-geek, and I love a book, so I was wondering if you guys could recommend any decent beginner poker books to help me on my way? Any advice muchly appreciated.

If you're talking about the "Top 10 Poker Books" thread that was just started, ignore it -- I think only one of those books is worth reading (Theory of Poker). It's a great general strategy book, but doesn't cover anything specifically about NLHE.

As Bikes said, "Easy Game" is a great one for NLHE. "No Limit Hold'em: Theory and Practice", by Sklansky & Miller, is another good one.

    Good luck!

    FWIW, i'm currently reading:

    • Harrington on Cash Games, Vol I and II

If by Geek you mean Maths-Geek you could check out:
    • The Mathematics of Poker by Chen and Ankenman
    • The Math of Hold'em by Moshman and
    • Killer Poker by the Numbers by Guerrera

A couple of good Odds/Probability primers are:
    • Texas Hold 'em Odds and Probabilities by Hilger and
    • Probability for Dummies

and a great little "keep it in your pocket" beginners' book is:
    • Texas Hold 'em Poker - Win Online by Mendelson

But also make sure you check out the Beginners' Digest here, and rpm's magnum opus "ftr threads" which have a ton of free, quality reading material for you to cut out and keep.
