Definition of a nit?

What does it actually mean?

I have trouble understanding posts when people say

"...... if he is a total nit"

"do this unless he is a nit"


please elaborate.

Nit = rock, hard to squeeze money out of, weak-tight, 6/4 VP$IP, Dan Harrington, folds everything but the nuts, etc.

The Nit: 13/9 (VPIP%/PFR%)

Setminers turn into nits when they’re all grown up. Nits take a general approach that’s similar to the setminer, but they play a few more hands preflop such as KJ and JTs on the button in unraised pots. Because they play more big card hands than the setminer, they’ll hit the flop more often (though not as hard on average), and they’ll generally be more willing to get all-in on the flop without a set. ... Nits don’t build big pots without big hands. If a Nit bets the flop and turn and then shoves all-in on the river, you almost never have a tough decision. Either you have the nuts, or you fold because he has them.

They define a setminer as 9/7 (VPIP%/PFR%) who only plays pocket pairs and then shove all-in if they flop a set or have over cards like AA/KK.

By and large, a nit is just a player who is too conservative and usually only pushes when he or she has a very good hand.

A nit in the low micros will typically play 5/2.....and dont play positionally aware poker. They only call, bet and raise with the very strongest of cards. If they call a bet post flop, they usually have a strong hand and often try to just shove the flop b/c they are so afraid to lose...They are very transparent.
