    Default Blu-Ray player??

    Hi guys,

I had a good win in a tourney on Saturday and have decided to spend half of it on a new TV + Blu-Ray Player.

I have already decided on the latest 42" Panasonic Plasma model but I'm still confused about Blu-Ray Player option.

What do you guys think? Here are the points I thought about

    PS3 Pro:
good Blu-Ray Player, can play many video format i.e. divx, mpeg2, H264(?). is also a gaming console, holds it price if I decide to resell
    PS3 Con:
more expensive, can only play Region 4 DVD's

    Panasonic Blu-Ray Pro:
Can play multizone DVD's, cheaper, looks perhaps better, only 1x remote for both TV & Player
    Panasonic Blu-Ray Con:
its only a player and can be outdated pretty quick

I'm going with the PS3. No real input except that it's firmware can also be updated. And trip's sig is awesome.

from what ive seen ps3's aren't really that much more expensive...except the money you will spend on games and controllers.

PS3. No question about it. It's still the only Blu-ray player that can update its firmware. That means, while other Blu-ray players fall behind in their capabilities as the spec is continually updated, only the PS3 will stay on top of it and allow you to do everything the format is meant to do.

Hmm thats about the best argument I have heard so far given that Blu-Ray technology is still in its infancy and if Sony can update it through firmware upgrades then its a no-brainer for the PS3. Thanks!

Also, as strictly a BD player, it's rated among the best performers. You really can't beat it.

btw, I've had a PS3 ever since it was announced that HD-DVD would no longer be supported by Toshiba. I've been thrilled with its movie playback and quality.

Not totally true. I bought a Sony BDP-s350 and you can update the firmware 3 ways(CD in drive, Thumb drive or ethernet connection).
I think the PS3 is great, but the fan noise can be an issue if you sit close to the system, you have to buy a separate remote, and it is more expensive than the latest Blu-Ray players.
The Sony BDP-s350 will be on sale at Sears on Black Friday for $179. Also the Panasonic Blu-Ray players are very well reviewed. The BMP-BD35 is base model like my S350 and the BD55 is for those with AV receivers that do not decode lossless audio formats if you care. Only newer receivers will decode new lossless audio available for Blu-Ray discs.
6 months to a year ago PS3 was BY FAR the best player out, but now other alternatives are really making it competitive. Black Friday will really be pushing Blu-Ray so I suggest you wait and buy one then.
Playing live . . . thanks alot Bin Laden.

Yes. I just learned today that the newer 2.0 BD players have Internet connectibility (as part of the 2.0-spec), allowing them to be be upgraded. It does sound like there are more viable options now.

I still like my PS3, though.

Another plus towards the PS3 I just thought about. I can always re-sell the PS3 next year (second hand ones are still quite expensive in NZ) and upgrade to the latest BD player if needed. I'm going shopping now!

I am sure that's when 50+ year old sale stuff have to wear undignified costumes because their boss tells them its a Black Friday fire sale and every stock has to go?

Got my PS3 yesterday. I think if I will buy one game only it will be between Metal Gear Solid 4 or Grand Theft Auto 4.
