What should I look for in Villian's betting patterns to decide if he's drawing to a flush or str8?

If I'm drawing, I'll generally go into checking mode if possible, or I'll call small bets (which is what Villian wants) or I'll bet small. If Villian bets big, I'll fold to keep from paying too high a price trying to hit. Is this typical donk play or a reasonable strategy?
