look through the stickies here. specifically, for "odds calculations."
typically, you can multiply by 2 with one card to come and multiply by 4 with two cards coming to approximate your percentage of catching what you need.
your missing cards are called "outs." and you multiply your "outs" by 2 or 4, respectively.
example: you have A4 and the board is 8 5 J. you estimate your A will win you the pot, if you catch it. there are 3 left that you dont "see." therefore, if on the flop, you multiply by 4....giving you a 12% chance of catching an A on the turn OR river. however, if the turn is a 2, you still have 3 outs. but, you only have one card to come. so, you multiply 3 by 2 and get a 6% chance of catching your A on the next card.
hope that makes sense. read the stickies for many more in depth explanations of how to use your odds.
