$5 Heads Up - 4 Person

[mikeneron]

This was the 2nd round and winner gets $20. I just wasn't getting any cards to do anything in this one. When you just aren't hitting anything, what do you do to combat it...do you just attack weakness every chance you get or do you try and wait it out until you finally do hit something? Early on I am trying to get cheap reads on my opponent, thus I play pretty passively at first. That kind of went out the window in the first 2 hands. Perhaps I should be calling, but I don't like to get involved in a big hand early on unless I have the goods.

When you just aren't hitting anything, what do you do to combat it...do you just attack weakness every chance you get or do you try and wait it out until you finally do hit something?

Time to play some poker. If you dont hit something, pretend you do .


Hand 1: Anything other than the first hand I'd probably reraise flop here, you're probably good, but why risk it. GF. I'd almost prefer a c/c flop and then lead turn line.

Hand 3: Flop is fine. c/c turn and river if bets arent too high. We dont want to build big pots with weak hands.

Hand 5: Raise this PF please. I'm fine with how you played it PF. You tried a good move but unfortunately this time he had a hand. It happens.

Hand 6: You're almost certainly ahead on flop, but I'm tempted to slowplay and hope he bluffs. Unless he holds a PP, theres really no card that helps him left in the deck.

Hand 8: I like this, nice restraint. I think its good to check to the river and show down crap sometimes.

Hand 9: I'd probably advocate betting my draw here. Bet flop, check turn, bet river when 3rd heart falls.

Hand 11: I probably 2nd barrel this. Lots of people float a c-bet.

Hand 18: You've got to raise these good hands.

Hand 19: Even this one I raise.

Hand 22: This is probably fine. I normally would say bet your draw, but theres a fair chance villian would raise you if you did. Unlucky to hit a FH.

Hand 23,24: Raise PF.

Hand 29: Just picking an example, but I'd like to see more turn bluffs from you overall. Not every time the flops checked, but sometimes.

Hand 40: Good. One edge those of us coming from STT backgrounds should have is solid Push/Fold.

Hand 42:Hmm, I'd literally need to run ICM on this one. It feels good, but given you've been pushing a fair bit, I make that limp about 50% wanting you to push over. I'm not sure if I prefer to check PF or push... Guess its not too wrong then.




Overall. Go through and count the hands you completed from SB, then lead flop and he folded. Now turn them into 3xBB raises which he calls 50% of the time and still folds to c-bet. Suddenly your stack looks a lot better. Thats the number 1 area of your game you need to work on.

There were a few spots there I was fairly sure opp was making a move on you, but I couldnt find the right spot to play back at him. At some point you need to. If you show you're prepared to call down with middle pair sometimes, you put doubt in his mind.

Most people will tell you that a heads up battle is as much a function of playing the player as it is playing your cards. With that said, below are some comments on your hands.

Hand 1 - Your flop bet was a tad weak, but not too far out of line. The fold is good as I think you are behind here.

Hand 3 - Personally I think you are good here. As aggressive as villian had been I think she would have raised pre-flop with a K or any PP. Had any other card but another K hit the turn (the second K actually decreases the probability that you are up against another K) I would have check/called reasonable bets on the turn and river.

Hand 5 - This hand should have told you a LOT about villian. She raised pre-flop with a one gap suited connectors, put out a nice sized C-bet when she hit on the flop and then moved to C/C mode when you called on the flop and she didn't improve.

So what does this tell us? She raises pre-flop with a wide (but reasonable) range of hands, she bets aggressively when she hits (or most likely also when she has a good draw) and she is solid enough to shut down when there are hands out there that beat her. Net, net - she seems to be a solid player who plays str8 up poker. You can use this to your advantage if you notice things like this.

Btw, YOU should have raised this pre-flop. Also, if you REALLY want to take this pot down on a bluff you need to bet like you have a hand. Your half pot sized bet doesn't do that.

Hand 9 - This would have been a good hand to raise pre-flop with as it would be VERY well disguised if you hit on it. I have noticed that you are limp/calling too much pre-flop. You need to mix it up more or you won't get any action on your big hands or your mediocre hands that hit.

Also, bet the turn on this and I bet you take down the pot.

Hand 11 - I don't hate the shutdown, but you have been pretty predictable to this point. You have C-bet just about every time you raised pre-flop so they are not getting as much respect. You need to mix that up some and either check sometimes on the flop or fire out again on the turn.

Hand 12 - I am betting on the turn here. Her pre-flop bet was higher than normal (4xBB instead of 3xBB) and she has shown that she bets her made hands which I think she DEFINITELY would have done here with a flush draw out there. I think she had you beat with a higher PP but would have laid it down to your bet on the turn.

Hand 13 - Based on how the play has been so far I would have raised pre-flop here.

Hand 17 and 18 - You HAVE to Raise pre-flop with these hands unless you have been raising pre-flop alot (which you hadn't) and are changing gears to trap your opponent.

Early on I am trying to get cheap reads on my opponent, thus I play pretty passively at first. That kind of went out the window in the first 2 hands. Perhaps I should be calling, but I don't like to get involved in a big hand early on unless I have the goods.

Poker strategy is often counter-intuitive. Stop playing the way you "like" to play, and start doing what's the most profitable. Passive play won't work against good players. This opponent was much better than you and your weak-tight play was no match for him.

Hand 1 - looking at the rest of the match, you were probably ahead here, but the fold is OK in a vacuum I guess.

Hand 3 - Turn bet is good, I'd call the raise and call a reasonably sized bet on most rivers especially if they don't complete a flush.

Hand 5 - Raise preflop.

Hand 9 - Raise preflop with any two cards 8 and higher when you're on the button.

Hand 11 - I disagree with bj and gator, turn check is good because ace high might be the best hand and you can try to check it down. However, when you hit second pair and he checks, he never has a queen and the lack of a value bet is completely terrible.

Hand 15 - Raise preflop.

Hand 17 - Raise preflop. You have a monster why are you letting him see a free flop?

Hand 18 - Raise preflop.

Hand 22 - Bet the flop please with two overcards and a flush draw. You can't fold the river. Make a note that he limps in with crap and start raising when he limps, you said you liked to play passively until you know more about the opponent but now you know he limps in with crap and you STILL didn't raise him very often at all after this.

Hand 23 - Raise preflop.

Hand 33 - Please re-raise him and get all-in, just calling against an aggressive player is really bad. I don't like your flop lead either considering that the last two times you led half pot into him he raised you as well.

Hand 34 - There you go!

Hand 42 - Fine, I would never check this in the big blind with 10x left in my stack.

I don't even play HU SnGs, but I just looked at this and thought that maybe a c/r would be good in hand 1. Of course we risk giving a free card but the preflop aggressor is likely to cbet here a lot, and we can easily get away from middle pair if he raises/ calls and turn doesn't improve our hand. Thoughts?
