    Default Tournaments for Beginners

    Hi,

I'm playing poker for about 4 months, one of these play money and the rest real($2NL and $4NL ring at Titan and $1.10 MTTs at Stars)

I'm not the overwhelming player, but I'm learning and am mainly interested in MTTs.
I've read HOH 1 and Roy Rounders No limit holdem, now I'm reading Sklanskys NLHE Theory and Practice. So I know the basics, but just them at the moment.

I want to improve my game, so I wanted to ask you at which stakes should I play?
Playing at $1.10 at Stars seems to me pretty much like a Freeroll, people going all-in with
almost any Hand with an overcard, which implies a lot of bad beats. It also implies that I've
doubled up easily very often. But still it doesn't seem to me like the best stake to improve my play.

I'm also not that wealthy, I have about 30$ to spend every month on poker.
Well it might sound silly but I don't have a real Bankroll at the moment. Getting into the money at the $1.10 at Stars(20% payout) is not that hard but I've never won any of them.

I hope for any advices, Lukas

PS: what about live tournaments? should I play these? will it improve my game to?

The biggest concern right now should be building your bankroll. What you will learn in $1 tourneys is patience. What you will learn at $2NL and $4NL is how to value bet. Read the bankroll management thread.

You can't make big moves if your opponents don't understand, or notice.

Determine a roll, if you can add $30 a month then do that. If you'd rather not you don't have to.

If you want to get some better practice $2NL is probably fine. Since some people are playing 250BB deep it gives you the freedom to start with worse hands and work on post-flop decisions. Hopefully you move up decently quickly. You should be able to get to 10NL quikcly just by getting paid off on your goods hands.

    Welcome to FTR, and gl

    Drinking your milkshake.
The micro MTTs on stars have such huge fields its going to be tough to build a roll playing them - most of your profit will come when you make a final table, but thats going to be very infrequent given that these things have over 1000 players.

I'd switch to grinding the multi table SnGs. This way you will also get some practice at playing shorthanded and playing heads up. Once you have ground out a few hundred bucks, you can move to the $4-180s, which are fun, and super fishy.

imo, you learn something extremely valuable from EVERY level you play.

i used to want to play at the level in which poker was played most predictably, because i could then learn to make reads. guess what? I NEVER FOUND IT. no such level exists.

what i learned was, if you cannot beat the smallest levels, you cannot beat the higher ones. the smaller levels teach you fundamentals that the others at higher levels have already mastered...THATS WHY THEY ARE UP THERE. if you cannot beat the fish, or learn the difference between patience and selective aggression, you will get killed by those who have learned those fundamentals.

keep reading, keep grinding, and DONT PLAY ABOVE YOUR HEAD until you are ready...both menatally and monetarily.
LHE is a game where your skill keeps you breakeven until you hit your rush of random BS.

I meant to say what Jimmy said, don't bother with the 1k+ entry tournaments. If you want an MTTish game play the 45 man. If you want to play the $4-180 then play the $1 single/double tables to build your roll (if you go the SnG route).
