Information raises at 25NL

Hi all,

Been playig at 25NL for 2,500 hands and want to analyse my play. I had some hands in the Hand History section "critiqued" by some FTR members and wanted a bit more info on this specific subject.

In some of the hands it seems I should have been raising for information. Should I be Min raising to get information? Raising more?

If I am re-raised I can see that he really likes his hand but if my raise is just called what does this really tell me?

For example: In this hand how much should I raise on the flop to try and define my hand? If he just calls the raise, what do you put him on?

Throw out a pot sized bet on the flop. If villain has AQ, KK, or AA, they would at least call. If they have TT, AK, or worse (the hands that you beat), they will fold.

If they call or raise your flop raise, I'd set up for a check/fold mode.

Fold the flop. Since you didn't post reads, I'll assume villian's range for 3-betting is AA/KK/QQ/JJ/AK. Against a typical tight-passive, you're not ahead here often. Only thing you beat is AK, and do you think villian fires 3 barrells with it?

Raising for information is an over-used term and almost cliched in NLHE, IMO. Sure you do get information when you raise, but I'm saying that when you raise, information shouldn't be your only motivation. When in position, calling is a great way to get information as well as to control the pot size. Seeing how villian reacts to the next card can get you some great info, and in turn help to define his hand.

Edit: Important also to note that practicing calling for info, rather than raising for info, can potentially turn you into somewhat of a calling station, especially just starting out and not having played a whole lot of hands. Therefore I think my advice might not be totally appropriate, since one of the key things you have to learn when first starting out is how to be aggressive. Maybe just keep it in the back of your head until you move up a limit or two.

playing so passively is awful, especially here without even TP.. because the only way you win is if your hand is best. You even have position! For a second way to win use aggression fold the flop or Re-raise and either take it down or if called then check fold (your mid pair is obviously no good)
