Yup. Whilst I haven't got to the bottom of this thread yet, Mannerboy is correct. I was a lot like you. Played for more than a year, like a dimwit, it turns out.
Based on Aok's strategies and advice, I've turned my game around starting about, oh, 4 months ago now.
I started to grind it out at the $2NL tables. I was playing a bunch of everything before that, but I was playing a lot of limit. Limit sucks, by the way.
Read some books, too, though you'll find the advice here is much more relevant, books give you the basic grounding into the theory of the game.
Aok is an NL dude, though, so if you're into limit, then you'll have to pick someone else's posts for your guides. Fnord and some others who I can't think of at the moment would fit that bill.
Two other important things to grasp are discipline and emotional control. I am a great example of that. I can get dissuaded and down really easily. But now that I have a solid strategy, and have proven that I can win, I can control my doom-ridden emotions -- somewhat -- and carry on with little damage to my play.
Oh, and another important thing is bankroll management. That's probably already mentioned later on here, but it's important nonetheless.
I just came off the worst streak of cards and flop "luck" in my career. About 3,000 hands of limbo. I didn't lose a lot, but I didn't win anything at all. I was starting to think that I should quit, that I couldn't really play the game.
However, I re-read an FTR post of mine and took some advice from one of the more advances players (Salsa4ever), re-applied that to my game, got some self-confidence back, and then, yesterday, my streak of nothingness came to an end.
Loads of new players --myself included -- don't appreciate how long a downswing can last. I'm lucky that I had a decent enough game for this dip, 'cause 6 months ago, I would've busted down to about 50 bucks.
Long answer, sorry.
Read Aok's posts.
