Default Any Advice for the new comers.

Hi there im a middle class player ive been playing for about 2 years but never really caught on till about 2 months ago...Im really having trouble on what hands to play and what to do in certain situations. I know that many of you out there have great poker knowledge and i was just seeking some advice. Now there are many aggressive and conservative players out...i was just wanting to know what you think is the best way to play your cards and what stragety you use.

Read all the guides FTR has to offer and all the input players offer. This is far too general of a question for anyone to answer. Your playing style and strategy is for you to decide based on what works best for you.

Asked and answered. Not trying to be rude but bigred is right...it's far too general a question.

    1. Pick your game (limit, no limit, ring, Sng, MTT etc...)
    2. Go to the relevant forum and read the stickies
    3. Develop your own style - start from tight agressive and work your way from there

use the search thingy to look for a post entitled "19 Starting Hands". There is quite a bit of detail in there.

Basically though, as the others have said, it is a bit too general a question. What type of game are you looking to play? (MTT's, SnG's, Cash/Ring). Maybe if we got this, we could start to modify the responses. They are different in approach.

I know it sounds like people are giving you shit, but they are just trying to help guide you in the right direction. Every new member asks the same first question "how do I get better and what style should I play TAG or LAG, blah blah blah blah." Hey, guess what? I did the same thing and I got the same answers as you did, "too general bro and post some hand histories." You asked for help, so take their advice and check out the strats, book reviews, other people's hand histories, and post your own hand histories. Oh, and go with Fnord's advice. It always seemed to help me.

At the beginning poker is like performing open heart surgery without any knowledge of anatomy, and you ask the other doctor what knife you should use. The answer will always be "The sharp one".
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

Well Everyone thanks for nothing. What cards should you call on....I mean i want to learn from you guys....What do you do when your looking down at pocket aces...that was an example...What stragety do you guys use when playing poker...what are your thoughts and stragetys.

Before asking...search. There is a wealth of knowledge on this website if you just look....go to the beginners forum first of all....read it...look at the recommended books.....read them....pick what type of game you are playing....read the posts for that typical forum...and then...start asking/start posting.

What we are getting at is that in poker there is not a special strategy or secret to winning. It all depends upon the type of game you're playing, position, size of the blinds, stack size, how many players, your image, their image, and then the cards. I probably left out bunch of other stuff as well. Each hand that you are dealt can be played in many different ways depending upon the situations that I listed above. People are giving you advice here you're just not seeing it. Seek knowledge from posts at FTR by doing a search of a subject that is giving you trouble. Like "how to play AA". Get your hands on some books. I would go down the list under the book review section and start reading the top ranked books. Get into a habit of posting your hand histories that you had trouble with.

I relate poker to golf. Everyone is searching for the secret or that magic move to make the ball go where they want it to go. But, everyone is different and each situation you face on the course is different. So there's not one specific move or secret that will work for every situation or type of person. Same with poker.

Everything in poker is situational. The answer is always "it depends". The level to which you get that answer mixed with something actually useful depends on how well you have described the situation. Since all you have described is "im sitting in a poker game and i have 2 cards against some opponents", we cant very well help you out.

Do you want to play Limit or No Limit?
Do you want to play Cash games or tournaments?
Do you want to play big tournaments or little tournaments?

Answer these questions first. Then I will ask you more. Eventually you will get answers

...or you could go to www.flopturnriver.com , and read through Tysons little story on the front page and follow the links he has set out for people just like you.

The Beginner's Guide is a must.

Last of all that "thanks for nothing" comment certainly isnt going to help you. Ive given you the benifit of the doubt because I know it must seem like we're just newbie bashing and refusing to answer your questions. The fact is your questions really are too general to answer here. It would take hundreds of pages to answer them and its all been written before so go to the beginners guide and start there. Hopefully that will answer most of your questions. Read it all, follow all the links and then play a couple of play money SnGs. Come back in a day or two with more questions

How do you know if someone is bluffing. There has to be some keys to knowing when to do all of this....How do you be aggressive enough to bluff someone out of a pot.

in general, don't bluff. the only bluff you should ever do, for a long long time, is a continuation bet. this is when you raise preflop, and get 1-2 callers, and the flop totally misses you. sometimes, you still should make a bet on the flop, even though your hand now sucks, because the other 1-2 people in it with you probably missed too, and might fold. otherwise, don't bluff.

knowing whether someone is bluffing takes a long time to get down. basically, after you play for a while, you will begin to understand what patterns people have in their betting when they probably have certain hands. when you see someone do something that doesn't fit in with a pattern, that's when you get suspicious they're bluffing. as far as you're concerned, just learn what betting patterns represent what hands and that will go a long way.

Let's try this again. Nck, this question has been asked many times and there are hundreds of posts from wise FTRers ALREADY WAITING FOR YOU on the beginners board. I don't think it's reasonable of you to expect people to tailor answers to your vague questions when they've already given a lot of thought and time to others in your situation.

Get off this thread, go to the index of the Beginners' Circle, and start reading down from the top, in particular the 8 or so "sticky" posts with the yellow icon. These deal with key concepts for beginners and have been judged excellent enough to be retained at the top for all newbies to see.

If there are specific areas you are interested in, the forums have a search function - I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Certainly, all the specific questiosn you've asked so far are there for sure.

Dude you have to learn all this stuff yourself through experience. We cant tell you "well player x is always bluffing if he takes 4.56 seconds to act on the turncard" or whatever.

One thing I will say is that when I look for bluffing I'm looking for betting patterns which don't make sense compared to the hand I thought the guy had.

And if you want to save yourself a load of $$ believe me now... unless you are playing 400nl, when someone bets... they have a hand. Don't develop 'he's bluffing syndrome'.

Yup. Whilst I haven't got to the bottom of this thread yet, Mannerboy is correct. I was a lot like you. Played for more than a year, like a dimwit, it turns out.

Based on Aok's strategies and advice, I've turned my game around starting about, oh, 4 months ago now.

I started to grind it out at the $2NL tables. I was playing a bunch of everything before that, but I was playing a lot of limit. Limit sucks, by the way.

Read some books, too, though you'll find the advice here is much more relevant, books give you the basic grounding into the theory of the game.

Aok is an NL dude, though, so if you're into limit, then you'll have to pick someone else's posts for your guides. Fnord and some others who I can't think of at the moment would fit that bill.

Two other important things to grasp are discipline and emotional control. I am a great example of that. I can get dissuaded and down really easily. But now that I have a solid strategy, and have proven that I can win, I can control my doom-ridden emotions -- somewhat -- and carry on with little damage to my play.

Oh, and another important thing is bankroll management. That's probably already mentioned later on here, but it's important nonetheless.

I just came off the worst streak of cards and flop "luck" in my career. About 3,000 hands of limbo. I didn't lose a lot, but I didn't win anything at all. I was starting to think that I should quit, that I couldn't really play the game.

However, I re-read an FTR post of mine and took some advice from one of the more advances players (Salsa4ever), re-applied that to my game, got some self-confidence back, and then, yesterday, my streak of nothingness came to an end.

Loads of new players --myself included -- don't appreciate how long a downswing can last. I'm lucky that I had a decent enough game for this dip, 'cause 6 months ago, I would've busted down to about 50 bucks.

    Long answer, sorry.

    Read Aok's posts.
