Please help a noob out?

Hi!

Im a noob tring to learn this game. I have two poker questions and maybe some of the more experienced players on this forum would like to help me out

* What does bb mean is it big blind or big bets and whats the different? If you play NL 1/2 how much is bb?

* If you raise 3 dollars preflopp with AJ (big blind is 1) and you are called by one player. If then the flop is K82 and you will like to try buy the pot. What is a reasonable raise in that situation?

in No Limit bb = big blind. so in 1/2 NL (which i dont recomend you try starting at if you are really just starting out, unless you have lotsa cash that you can afford to lose) it would be 2 dollars.

Normally 1/2 - 2/3rds of the pot as a "continuation bet" is a good amount if your opponent completely missed. Thats not really a hard and fast rule, it will differ from opponent to opponent, but thats pretty standard continuation bet size. So in your case, 3-4 dollars.

Continuation is a vital (and sometimes very advanced) topic. I never continue for less than the pot amount if the pot isn't built. I only started doing that after developing a feel for continuation and being right about continuing or not after the flop. Against certain opponents you just know they are smart enough to slow play any flop hit and check raise you hard.

I call raises with rags against constant continuations by aggressive opponents. If the flop comes out rags (whether I hit or not), I check raise them all day. One time it really backfired for a $50 buy in. Guy raised preflop with J8. I called with 22 and the flop came out 882. The turn and river were 66. I had all my money in when the board read 8826. The river porked me. I lost my pile because I didn't put him on a rag.

1. When people say BB talking about limit, they always mean Big Bet. Most times you hear BB talked about in no limit, they will always mean big blind. Poker Tracker keeps track of your progress - even in no limit - in terms of Big Bets (BB) / 100 hands. That's the main reason why you'd ever hear a NL conversation where BB meant Big Bet - when it involved poker tracker.

2. Bet out like 2/3 of the pot. Generally raise 4xBB preflop no 3, too. So, in .5/1 if you raise to 4 with one caller, bet maybe 6 on the flop with a pot of 9ish. If two called, and the pot is 12ish, bet out 7-9. Continuation bets can take some finesse sometimes, but they're really not hard to be good at.
