$5000 +$300 SNG

Well i,ve won an entry into the step higher 5 at party and for the first time playing poker am feeling some pressure. I generally play medium stake SNG's and MTT's $50 and odd $100 entry purely for recreational purposes. Whilst playing step 4 it was indicated that there are a no. of aggressive high rollers who regularly buy directly into steps 4 and 5.
The problem is that I know I am a Tight/passive player and am concerned that these aggressive sharks ( examples of which post here often) are going to sniff me out and eat me for breakfast!
Do they even exist ?Do I try to change my style or just try to treat the game like any other $50 sng? Any advice from you high stakes players would be appreciated.
By the way top 3 are paid 1st $25000 2nd $15000 3rd $10000

Even the 200 dollar sngs are significantly more aggressive then the 50's, i can only imagine what the 5000's are like. If you play tight passive, especially with scared money, you will get eaten alive.

Imo you should get someone who plays high stakes to help you out on this tourney. There are several very good party sng players on this board, and i'm not going to volunteer them, but i'm sure someone would help you out.

Gamb0l. You can't win if you play tight/passive. You simply can't.

So you gotta figure out some way to step it up. Play tight, bet when it makes sense, grow some balls.

dont be scared and definately dont sell your seat. I dont know if you can wait and play in this whenever you want or if it is on a certain day and time. If you can wait i would say just watch some of the other steps on this level and get a feel for it. You defiantely want to play in this to gather some experience as this could be one of hte few times you get to play in an event at this level. I definately wouldnt want to sell my seat in the upcoming WSOP main event because who knows when ill get to play again and i feel i can learn alot from the experience

yeah. ask the big tourney players on FTR for help, and I dunno...offer them each a 5-10% cut for helping you out if you win, maybe? I'm sure they'd be glad to help out; I see aces has already volunteered.

Congrats on getting to step higher Step 5. Holy crap...!!!?!!! If you do play, try to give us here on FTR a heads up. It'd be exciting to watch, since step higher step 5's tend not to fill up very often. :P

Great suggestion Grand master cant believe I didnt think of it. Will watch a couple and chew on it. 4k would nearly dble my BR but hey I am not in it for the money thats why i have my day job.
Maybe I've come across a little more Newb/scared than I actually am.Have read all guides posted by the regulars and found them most useful. As you can see been lurking on here over a year !

Had a go at a $200 last night(well about 2 am for me) have removed all uneventful hands just showed what I folded and the odd comment.No player struck me as anything other than solid!

you played way too many hands early, completing from the small blind, limping QJ, Ax suited, etc. you need to conserve chips for the bubble in these party sngs and only play premium hands. when you get to the bubble you need to either go all-in or fold preflop, when the blinds become 100/200 and higher there simply aren't enough chips to raise preflop and play post flop poker. just push your good hands when you are in the right positions.

I would strongly urge you to sell the seat and have it pad your roll. Even though it might not be for the money, higher rolls let you get the higher stakes etc. If you want to play a step tournament like that one, try selling your seat and doing something like a step 5 mini or regular steps. I can't urge people enough to look for the easiest way to build a bankroll. A bigger bank roll leads to so many other posibilities. I've made some mistakes with my bankroll, but I still have a strong roll, but hopefully soon enough it will be stronger. Good luck in which ever choice you make venster.

ii have to agree with iwa here, creating a big and stable bank roll is extremely tough. Its very hard to win one of this higher steps and you could still use some more practice. I know selling sounds a little bit like taking the easy way ouit and basically running but its the best thing you can do for yourself and for your poker "life" right now. If you can get aces or michael to help you, omit everything I just said

Congrats on making it too that step. I am curious how much you have invested too get there? Time and money... I haven't really put much effort into those tournaments but I was thinking of giving it a shot.

A few comments on your tournament.

Early tourny limps were questionable.. try to only limp the weaker hands off other limps.

late game is where i think you could use a little more confidence/aggression. One hand stood out that you had a good instinct on and said "I thought about the steal but decided not too because he was low on chips."

That doesn't really matter because at that point the blinds are pretty big compared to everyone but the big 5k guy. With K2 in the SB that'd definitely worth a raise. You're way better than an average hand, and you also have a strong chance of getting him too fold out. even though k2 is a weak hand, 4-handed/high-blinds/2-folds it becomes strong!

Another thing I noticed was that you seemed to be making preflop raises of half your stack or lots of your stack. When you only have enough chips for 5 more circuits of hands, your only bet is all-in at that point. And without a very good hand you should make sure that you are the one pushing and not calling. You making those odd raises may have made the other players fold out on the other hand, I would have assumed you had aces or kings and wanted a call.

I think you need to just kick your late game aggression up a little bit and you will be good to go! good luck man. Let us know what you decide to do. I think I would sell it if I got there for cheap, and play if i payed a lot and worked forever to get there.

To answer your question Ender. Money invested $166, two buy ins step 1 and one at step two. Must have bounced around step 1 about eight times got close a couple of times but only 1st goes thru , decided to buy in at step two and got knocked back to step one. Then bingo straight thru !
Have invested $99 since then and got as far as step 3 must have played 15 times which is plenty of poker for your dollar! This is fine by me cos I only play for entertainment . For others building their roll its not much dollar for your hours!
If you do decide to have a go one thing that not everyone has picked up on and which can be used to your advantage is that they dont play like an ordinary SNG. Each level has a different payout structure so the bubble moves. For instance at step one 2nd- 6th get another go and 7th gets back $25.Once down to 6 or 7 only 1st counts so if I am short /mid stack I will push/call AI's with less than in a regular sng .

Well spotted about the raises above:- My personal feeling is that unnecessary AI's often mean "I want you to fold, please dont call" where as mid strength raises say" hey I,ve got the goods call if you want" plus at the higher levels these guys Know I am virtually pot committed and they are gonna see all my chips in the pot one way or another.

Would love to start a debate about the "tight is right" in these relatively quick sngs at levels one maybe two.Is it really that wrong if the table lets you limp ? Assuming you dont catch anything are those 100 or so chips you might squander that valuable later when the blinds are 50/100 plus? Would it make any difference if your stack was 850 not 750? Dont get me wrong I am not advocating a big departure from soupies/rada's etc guides just wondering! (I am of course assuming that no chips are squandered post flop).

I don't think you have to play by tight is right early sng. As long as you don't get in a bad habit playing weaker hands to big raises it's fine. Your stack is so huge compared to the blinds that you can really adopt any style at this point. I try to make sure that i'm not putting too many chips in with my weaker hands however, i like to play "shortball" as harrington would say early sng.
