MTT Bubble Bust

[aero500]

I was in a MTT (904 entrys) and only 20 seats away from $$, and working towards my chip goals. I was playing very tight (except for the 1st time I hit AA..lol..not good I know). Everyone was very aggressive and I wasn't hitting anything...tried to blind steal (playing position) and got slaughtered...not sure what i am doing wrong, posted my last SnG and everyone advised playing tighter early on...so I did, but then could never take off because of all the big bets vs. my stack...HELPPPP...plz

Yeah, that AA hand was a little nutty. That being said, with that many limpers you do want to fire out a decent raise. I'd put in at least 150, and possibly up to 175 or 200. You only want one caller, 2 at most. They still might all fold, but you don't want to raise too little and have all of them call.

Hand 21: Meh... with a rainbow flop you might be able to get away with checking the flop and hope somebody hits a high pair. Your bet wasn't outrageous.

Hand 23: With blinds that low, and your stack that high... I'd be trying to limp with 33. Depends on your read of the table... but from the first few hands it seems as though people like limping. I'd limp for the set even from UTG and go for the monster pot. Once the blinds get higher I fold these... or raise to steal.

Hand 30: Ew. Personally I don't like the flop check. You got two callers preflop, so you've made some money. QQ is pretty vulnerable. Your callers could have AK or something, so any K or A that comes up gets scary quick. I'd bet the flop and take it down there. The next thing I'd do is add God Fada to your buddy list. The hand did end up working well for you.... but I wouldn't recommend slowplaying QQ.

Hand 33: Any reason you didn't raise the turn? That's a better way to find out where you're at. Similar to the QQ hand, you should try to take the hand down when you have the best of it, or at least get your money in there. Unless the guy has AT you're likely winning this... so get some cash in.

Hand 36: No way you play that hand. G00t fold. Odd all-in by that guy, but I guess he was targetting the BB.

Hand 41: Dicey call, but maybe you had some read there or something. I would have assumed the guy had a better ace and was trying to push people off flush draws. You didn't have odds to call that on the flush draw.... did you have a read on the guy?

Hand 52: If you didn't fold this preflop you should be shot. A6o. That's a brutal hand, especially with a raise before you. Definately fold.

Hand 69: G00t fold. No sense putting that much on the line for a T8s. Nice attempt at a steal (even with limp before you), but you have to lay this down.

Hand 81: You got what you wanted from this... I wouldn't play it any differently.

Hand 82: You easily had odds for that flop call. I would have been tempted to fire out a 2-300 bet instead. You take control of the hand, and if you get 2 callers you have pot equity to make that a good move. It also might make it cheaper for you. Other than that, fine.

Hand 94: Fine

Hand 99: Raise preflop. You have poor position, so get some money in while you likely have the best hand. On the flop you should DEFINATELY be raising. You likely have the best hand, and you need to push this guy of a potential flush draw. You're lucky he didn't have hearts. You should have been the one betting/raising on this hand, not him. This is not a hand to smoothcall in my opinion.

Hand 116: I'd either raise or fold the turn. At best you have a gutshot draw... you're lucky you didn't hit your A or K. If you fold, you save 1200. If you raise, you give him the option of folding. If he calls or raises you, your done with that hand.

Hand 120: Ballsy, but I like it. You'd only have 2000 left if you don't win this hand... so you might as well get your chips in now and give him the chance to fold. I think this was a perfect move. Well played hand.

Hand 126: Dicey, but it's good to steal out of position occasionally. I'd rather do it with suited connectors or something, because people will call you or push all in with AK, AQ, AJ... fish love aces. Still, I like this move.

Hand 128: Tough break. You've GOTTA fold that river though. The guy smoothcalled you the whole way through. Either he has an 8, a pocket pair, or an A. I might have bet this a little harder earlier... the guy might make his move sooner. Another option is to raise big preflop. Against a stack this large though, probably not. You need to fold that river though. The only hand you beat is a bluff. Since you've been betting the whole time, he knows you have something... so I doubt he's bluffing.

Hand 129: Meh. You have 3:1 pot odds on what you're hoping is a coin flip. I think you call with pretty much anything. At least you're probably not dominated right? 74o? Sure, why not.

#14 - you did alright. Trying to get value is something I will do from late position. From the middle, a 400 chip raise may get interest from AKs and certainly QQ and KK will call. You want to isolate to 1 or 2 plrs but that's tough to do without good position.

#21 - I would raise to 90 PF. On the flop, two plrs checked to you.. board looks uncoordinated so why not slow play. Maybe someone will connect the A or K and you can take a nice pot.

#23 - don't lay those down!!! Those are GOLD! limp in and try to make a set like #21. If you don't connect with the set, just fold. You have a 1 in 8 chance of connecting.

#30 - unlike AA, with these you want fewer hands in (ironic isn't it). Your
200 raise got you 3 callers which could mean trouble. But you got a ragged board. I would fire away on the flop with a 500 raise or go AI. Don't let the guy holding a K or A see the turn!

#33 - middle pair and OESD on the flop. fire away. A 300 bet seems OK
on the flop

#36 - good

#41 - good

#52 - good

#69 - good

#81 - good

#82 - good. think of the pot you would take if you made the straight. you have about 1 in 3 odds of making it, so your 500 chip investment could net you at least 3000 (a 6 for 1 pay off). Ofcourse you would raise at least another 1000 for more.

#94 - excellent

#99 - raise.. get into the habit of raising on the flop. You will also build a good image to allow you to steal blinds later.

#116 - why call the turn bet? If he called your flop bet, he's got something. In this case its a semi-bluff but on the turn you either fold or raise. If you got the goods you should raise him hard. If not, you can either try your own semi-bluff (which would have worked in this case) or fold.

#120 - Good stealing the blinds move. Got lucky he didn't connect.

#126 - good

#128 - you got to slow it down if you get called. Ask yourself, what could
he have to call me with? Pkt pair? Did he connect with the board? Your call on the river is very poor.

#129 - you are SB. You can wait another orbit and pick a better hand to go AI with.

tytytytytytytyty.....This is great feedback! My biggest concern is if I would have made these changes was my play strong enough to win? It seemed that everyone was over aggro and I could not meet my chip goals so I ended up small stack against a table that consistantly went AI or led w/ 5xBB+ bets...(that why i slow played a few..figured they would just keep betting no matter what like every other hand)I logged on here real quick and read an MTT thread that said if the table is really aggro tighten up...so I did...and ended up with the image of being very weak..so everyone called, and called again or re-raised...I guess what I am trying to learn is if you are playing tight early in a MTT and come time to step it up (50/100 or 75/150) and everyone else gets aggro (and you are small-mid stack because of tight play) what do you do? If I stay tight, well we see what happens, if I get more aggro (granted I wasn't getting crap for cards, but normally that doesn't matter much for me) than I am getting called/beat...so, what to do...thanks guys!!!!

If you feel you've earned a tight weak image and you are short stack on the final table you need to lay low and wait for a hand to AI on. Its too bad you got into this position but the only way out (that I can see) is to make a big score and reestablish both your confidence and your image.
Hopefully you will get something like AQ or better and get a couple of callers to double or triple you. Otherwise, you are facing elimination no matter how you look at it.

To avoid getting this image you need to be tight and aggressive. This means only play groups 0-2 and 3 from late position; but play them hard with good pre and post flop raises. Also look for opportunities to limp in with small pairs and even the odd suited connector from late position (if the pot looks healthy). Look for opportunities to bluff when you feel your opponents didn't connect and you have position -- but watch for the habitual slow players.

Alot to think about but that's what makes the game so much fun.
