A lot of players do this on the idea that they can make more money this way. If the flop is high cards and likely to hit someone, it comes off as a bluff and the player with two pair or TPTK may be more inclined to call than if it was a large bet following a traditional slowplay. I know if I raise AK and flop AKT, and a guy shoves all-in ahead of me - I want to call. His move is sound; he's on JQ but he knows that flop smacked me hard and that I will want to call him hoping it's a bluff.
The other advantage of this is that you may or may not make a lot of money slowplaying a hand, but this method is all or nothing. You either double up or you don't. If you get called 1/3 of the time you're making a pretty good profit, and if you save this tactic for situations where you know your opponent flopped something good, you might get called half the time or better.
