Odds of getting a "premium" hand?

I just went through a sit n go and lost from losing blinds. I never raised or called any bets, I went in a couple times when I had an A. The absolute best hand I had during the session was A9s, which isn't very good. I'm used to winning sit n goes, so I know this was just bad luck, but I'm kind of curious what the odds are of getting a premium hand. Thanks.

aces are 1 in 220... so kings and queens and jacks should be as well. i don't know the odds of AK of the top of my head, but you should get used to the idea that you could go 1000 deals without getting any really great hands. Fnord complained about not seeing AA for over 1600 hands.

What counts as a premium hand?

If you only count AA, KK, QQ, and AKs, the probability is about 1.7%. If you play 100 hands, there's almost a 20% chance that you'll never see a premium one.

If you throw in JJ and AKo, the probability rises to 3%. If you play 100 hands, there's only about a 5% chance you'll never see a premium one.

Not that it matters a lot, but the odds of any particular pocket pair is 1 in 221, or 220 to 1 against. This is found by taking the probability of getting the first A, e.g. -- 1 in 13 -- and multiplying it by the probability of getting the second A -- 3 in 51, or 1 in 17. 1/13 * 1/17 = 1/221.
