Default Who flips first on showdown? Does it matter?

First of all, excellent site guys!! I've been Googling "texas hold 'em message board" for weeks now, and have yet to find anything even approaching this site.

My question is this - I'm not sure if I'm crazy or not - I swear that I heard or read once that, upon showdown, the person who got called is the one who customarily turns over the cards first.

This gives the guy who made the call the opportunity to muck his cards. Is this true, or is there no "custom"? I know this isn't a huge deal, but we always seem to get showdowns where no one wants to be the first to flip, and it gets old... zzzzzzzzzzzz

Hopefully this isn't the one basic rule of poker, and I'm not revealing my true newness to the sport

Thanks for any help on this one.

    This is correct.

The last player to bet/raise shows first. Clockwise, thereafter.
If everyone checks on the river, the player in first position (closest to the left of the dealer) shows first.

Hey this is my first post!!

In heads up play i believe that it is customary to play rock-paper-scissors best out of three in order to decide who flips first.

Further more, the people who don't want to show their cards right away probably know that they've lost the hand. Either that or they have a really unbeatable hand that they want to slam it down on the table once they've seen your cards and know they've won.

Oh Yeah, how do you get those chip-trick clips by your posted message?

That might be fun at home games. So I would guess the person who plays like a "rock" will choose rock all the time? I would be paper all the way!

Thanks very much for posting that thread link. Had I seen that previously, I'd never have wasted the bandwith to ask the question myself

Your first response to Humphrind was the reason I asked - everyone in my home game always does what you indicated... just sits and waits for "the other guy" to show his cards.

Makes you want to stand up (especially when you're out of the pot and ready to move on) and yell TURN THE F'IN CARDS OVER ALREADY!!

    Thanks again.
