The forbidden

I am going to a home game this Sunday (NL tournament). The weird thing is, I have been warned, check-raises are forbidden.

Does anyone else play this way?

That is ridiculous. I have never heard that before.

I've heard of that. From Handbook of Winning Poker by Edwin Silberstang:

If a player checks before any player has opened, he is not out of the game but can come back and bet by calling the bet. He cannot raise, however, because check-and-raise is not permitted unless all the players agree to it beforehand. If there is no general agreement, check-and-raise is not allowed.

Yeah, I think I read it somewhere in a book too, although I thought it was vice-versa, and unless it was made clear you can't check-raise, you could use the manoeuvre.

Its nice to play in a homegame but I think this is one I would pass on. I use the check-raise alot and it can be a valueable tool. I wouldn't want to change my game and play without one.

Well, he can make a million rules and I'm still going to play. I've been intending to play with this guy for a while but we have never had an opportunity. Also, it's only a $5 buy in. So not too much is at stake. But I did talk with him a little more about banning check-raises. He said that is how his friends normally play, but this will be at his house, and he likes check-raises, so he's going to allow them under "house rules" law.

He informed me of something else.

In this tournament, the blinds will double every time a player gets knocked out.

It seems like it will take a long time for this game to end.

Has he done this (blinds going up only when someone gets knocked out) before? I doubt that he has. This will undoubtedly take WAY too long.

Check raising is overrated anyway. Read Super/System. Make a smallish bet, hopefully he reraises, or at the worst calls, so youget a little more money in there...

The no check raise rule is not fair to the good players. One of your weapons is being taken away.

Sklansky talks about people complaining about check raises in one of his books. He has a good response to tell them but I don't remember it off the top of my head.

Hey, just to keep you updated. The game is this Sunday. I turned my friend onto www.homepokertourney.com and it really helped him out.

His original idea was to have 2 $5 tournaments with the blinds doubling when someone got knocked out. I politely informed him that we will be there until Tuesday afternoon. He got a lot of help planning and he has pretty much turned it into a standard tournament. 1,000 starting chips, blinds doubling every 20 min, 1 tournament, $10 entry.

He's looking to turn this into a semi-weekly thing. Same people, different place. Rules like check-raising will be under 'house rules', not 'league rules' (if you can call this a league) and it turning out to be good.

I just wanted to give everyone a quick thanks for turning me (and him) onto this poker tourney web site.

I've heard of many games like this before. They are set up for newbies. Alot of new poker seminars that people can attend have tournaments set up where you cant play like this. If this is the case could be a pretty easy tournament with all beginers
