Default EXCELLENT News for US Poker Players

Web gambling gets boost from Obama administration - Yahoo! News

Until now, the department held that online gambling in all forms was illegal under the Wire Act of 1961, which bars wagers via telecommunications that cross state lines or international borders.

The new interpretation, by the department's Office of Legal Counsel, said the Wire Act applies only to bets on a "sporting event or contest," not to a state's use of the Internet to sell lottery tickets to adults within its borders or abroad.

FWIW, the 2006 UIGEA is a MUCH larger hurdle for legal online poker than the 1961 wire act was.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

The UIGEA didn't change the legality of online poker.

Exactly. UIGEA isn't really the problem now that the status quo of 2006-2010 has changed. We can only hope this will provide the impetus for federal regulation, rather than multiple states supporting interstate and international games.

lol too much xmas cheer I guess. "Legal" was the wrong word. Hurdle in getting back to the glory days (Neteller, choice of any site, etc) is what I meant. The Wire Act news is a good-sized step in the right direction but we are still a long ways off from poker as we once knew it.

The UIGEA may not have made actual poker playing "illegal", but it threw, by far, the biggest wrench into the gears. It will take time to untangle the mess that it caused.

Indeed. You can be sure that there will be groups with the interests of banks and credit card companies at heart that will slow the progress in repealing/changing the UIGEA.

The only rendition of legal poker US players want is an alliance between Nevada and already established poker companies. State-by-state legislation would see extremely high rakes and poorly managed games that only add poker to their casinos as an afterthought
