My name is ryan and this is my first post. I have been playing poker for six months online with play money and at poker rooms for real money. I found this web site and realized i was playing wrong and didn't have enogh of a bank roll to play in the games i was playing. I want a good book on cash games plus stratige and odds and starting hands. I trust the advise from this site because as soon as i read about 15 hours of poker blogs and tostys stuff im better and it makes sence thanks for starting the site

You can learn all you need to know about starting ranges and pot odds here on the forum. Check the stickies...lots of good stuff.

As far as strategy goes, micros call for a TAG style. Play selective starting hands, play in position. Bet your draws fast, and play for fat value. That will pretty much have you beating the micros.

The best book on the market is Professional No Limit, imo. It does get into thinner value concepts that you don't need to master at the micros, but it's a good idea to get familiar with them.

There's nothing wrong with buying a poker book, and FTR has some recommendations which you can find elsewhere on the site.

You should also start posting your hands, along with reads and stats on the villains in the hand, and getting some advice as to how to play better.

With respect to odds, all that stuff is in the stickies.

With respect to starting hands, there are two things you should know:

1. For a beginning player, just about ANY starting hand chart from ANY poker book is fine, because the real leaks that are being fixed by using a starting hand chart are (a) playing too many hands and (b) playing out of position, and all the charts fix that leak in one way or another.

2. As you get better, you will learn WHY authors recommend certain plays on your starting hand chart, and how you can incorporate reads to modify your starting hand selection. In other words, once you fix the leaks of playing too many hands and out of position, you will want to develop your own approach as to what hands to play in what situations.

As already noted, the best way to start is to learn a solid TAG style. It's akin to laying a solid foundation for a building. So in terms of looking for a book, make sure you look at the ones that fit this goal. I'm sure some people have started by skipping ahead to advanced concepts and still been successful, but I'm sure many more have slowed their progress by giving their games more leaks to plug.
